I feel really underprivileged, I gotta say :O I'm a senior in high school and I turned 18 last month. Unlike a lot of people in my circle of friends, I have yet to get my driver's license. I've had my permit for about a year now (well, I had to re-acquire it after it expired, freakin' DMV). The thing is, I feel like it takes me awhile to fully grasp a lot of concepts in driving (parking took a few months, for example), but once it clicks, I'm a pretty solid driver. It just kinda sucks though, I'm a legal adult (took an extra year of preschool, WOOOOOO) who's still stuck in high school, in my parents' house, unable to escape unless my dad goes in the car with me.

It sure took me long enough to get my permit, let's just hope I can pass that behind the wheel test I have in a few weeks. It's times like these where the Aspieness is a real pisser.

When did all you get your licenses? Maybe some of you have had similar experiences to me.

I am 21 and I have no interest in getting a license; I have not even tried to get it yet. There is nothing special about cars; I do not see why people like them so much. However, I intend to get licenses to pilot airplanes, helicopters and yachts when I have the money (it will probably take a few decades until then).

Never. I had a permit and a car when I was 15 but was too scared to take the driving test and sold the car. I hated driving and don't plan on ever getting a license.

Cars are sweet.

That's pretty much the reason I got my license. I got mine at 18, though, I had my learners only since 17. I had the learners for like a year. Driving is pretty hard for me with NVLD, but I wanted to drive so I could pretend I was Takumi from Initial D. Plus it's sorta useful in America and all, not having your parents drive you places. It's hard, but it's just something you gotta push at, I'd say get a LOT of time practicing in a parking lot, I had almost a month 3-4 days a week for an hour in a parking lot before I went out on the road. That's how much I sucked at driving. One accident, one ticket (that I plead not guilty and beat) and I've been driving since 2009. Probably about 20-30K miles so far. I dislike the highways and busy streets and try to stay on backroads as much as possible, even if it takes more time, I'm not completely stressed and drained at the end of my drive that way.

Cars are limited by the ground and other cars. Boats and planes, on the other hand, have all the vastness of the ocean and the atmosphere to move around. 8)

And both require a gazillion more permits and other silliness to use compared to a car I can just hop into at any time I feel like.

Maybe I'll get one of those and just go fly to a job interview one day. That'd be cool.

Now I want a powered parachute license to go with my gazillion of flying and sailing licenses.

Well one thing to keep in mind, unless of course you have a flying parachute license, how are you gonna get to the sea or to an airport to fly/sail?

Public transportation. It is cheaper than having a car. Besides, I am used to it.

By now, you are probably asking: "if you are getting a license for flying/sailing, you sure as hell can afford a car." Yes, I could, but I would not want. Even if I were richer than Bill Gates, why should I spend my money on something I would never again use? I am just stubborn like that. :)

There's no public transport to the yacht clubs here.

I got mine when I was 18. I failed the written test the first time and barely passed it the second time by one question. (Those bus questions screwed me hard) I failed my first driving test almost instantly because I completely blanked out when the instructor was telling me what to do. That put me off trying to get my license for several months after that. Months later I decided to have another go at it. I had a bit more driving experience this time so I figured it wouldn't be as bad. The second attempt (at a different DMV) I did much better and passed fairly easily. It also helped that I had a much nicer instructor the second time around. The first one was a complete b***h.

It took me a really long time to feel comfortable with driving. When I first started I was extremely nervous because of the sensory overload and having to focus on so many things at one time. That and knowing that one wrong move on my part could result in a serious accident almost instantly. I was also (and still am to a fair degree) really bad about driving to new and unknown places. I would simply refuse to do it or find any way possible that I could ride with someone else, or at least have someone take me and show me the way first. I consider the GPS to be one of the most helpful inventions for an Aspie on the planet (second to the internet). When I need to go to an unfamiliar place it is a huge security blanket for me.

Oddly enough, when I was brand new to driving it wasn't the freeway driving that scared me, it was the TOWN driving. I got down the freeway driving almost instantly, aside from merging onto freeways which took me a little while to get confident with. Town driving was almost meltdown inducing because it's much more congested and more stop and go. It got me frazzled quite a bit.

Lack of public transportation is never a problem in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The traffic, however, is very bad and it is the main reason why I do not want a car. I could go to the beach by public transportation and I surely would suffer like normal drivers with the traffic jams, but with the benefit of not spending a ton of cash on fuel and toll.

Of course, that would prove unnecessary, since I would first acquire a helicopter license in my city and then I would use my helicopter to go to the beach and acquire my yacht license. I will be the happiest millionaire ever. :D :D :D

P.S.: I would like to clarify that everything I said here is absolutely true. It is really my dream to have a yacht, a helicopter and, above all, an airship someday. I will be rich someday; I do not see why it would be impossible for me. Some people may find it funny and think I am crazy, but that simply shows they lack ambition.

I got mine in 1973. That's 39 years ago.

If public transportation was more extensive in my area (and cheaper), I would use it more often. As it is, I can get to and from work in less than half the time it would take to use public transportation.
