I have a question, what did you do to break into your field? Did you just solve problem after problem, write program after program, of did some of you get creative and try to take on some projects? Did you become proficient on the job, or were there hobbies to help you along? Was there a set routine you followed on the way (like stopping when you couldn't concentrate anymore and playing mega man for a few minutes?).
I worked for my college in the off campus medical sciences building that hired me as an hourly worker part time. Then i worked there for about two years. It was for the medical school college of orthopedics as a lab tech. I also transported sterile supplies for them to and from the facility. It was nice. Then an opening at the college of veterinary medicine became available and i got a full time senior position which was awesome. Good luck! Gotta take those menial positions first because you are a better manager for it! If you can code, just find out what they need, and use the knowledge gained from the menial work to increase efficiency. Bioinformatics and computational biology are good. They build robots to calculate and simulate forces on the body during movement, and some of the results get translated to treatment for physical therapy after it is tested out.
