Just for a bit of background information I'm currently at university in the UK studying an unrelated subject. I'm reasonably fit and healthy and have a muscular build, but I'm a little on the short side. I have mild AS (diagnosed) which can make it difficult to interact with people.

I have not been able to find much information on the web about people with AS working in prisons. Every resource I look at seems to suggest that being a prison officer is one of the most unsuitable jobs for someone on the spectrum. Despite this, I am interested in becoming one. My main concerns would be passing the role play assessments during the application process, interacting effectively with prisoners and dealing with stress from working in a dangerous environment. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Imo this is a bad idea for an aspie to have a job with contacting daily bad and often aggressive people even if these contacs are highly formalized.

Again, the job is really stressful even if there are no prisoner riots, and you possibly won't have an opportunity to leave for 20 minutes and deal with stress in quiet place. How would you manage it?

I also don't know if it bother you that you'll frequently have to act like "bad cop" because it's obvious that persuation not oftn works with the prisoners. Personally for me this part of job could be hard sometimes.

And I assume you should read some articles and researches about professional deformation of prison officers during the service years. I heard they finally can see everyone as prisoners and behave accordingly in everyday life.

Well, it depends..... Are you the type of Aspie, like me, who can think faster / more clear than anyone else, in an emergency situation? If so, go for it!

^ agree 100%

Autistic people are in every career field you can imagine. Can you do a prison tour? At my university the crime and deviance majors get to tour local prisons to get ready for working in an environment like that.
