Hi all,

I'm a college student majoring in HR, and I'm in the process of writing my honors thesis on employing adults with Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism. This is an area I'm incredibly passionate about (I suspect I'm on the spectrum myself, though I haven't been diagnosed), and my hope is to one day provide career counseling to those with autism spectrum disorders.

As part of my thesis, I've put together a short survey for people who have AS, HFA, or other autism spectrum disorders. It would help me out immensely if you could all respond and pass it along to any friends/family who qualify as well. The more responses I have, the more accurately I can use the data produced, so every little bit helps. It's very short - I wouldn't expect it to take anyone more than 5-10 minutes to complete.

If you are currently employed:

If you are currently unemployed:

Thanks so much to everyone who replies! I really, really appreciate it. :D

I tried to take the survey for employed folks. I couldn't get it to submit. the done button took me back to the first page. I clicked through again and the last page I had filled out was blank. I filled it out again, only to be redirected to the first page again. I give up. I've either submitted the survey twice or not at all.

Hmm, strange. I'm looking at my results, and it's already showing answers from two individuals (they differ, so I know it's not just your two attempts). Thanks so much for trying, though. Maybe your computer/browser just doesn't like the website.

Would you like international replies?

If the respondent is self-employed and is not constantly working, do you want a survey completed, and which one?

I took it, no problems. If you get one that has a really long story at the end about working for Dollar General, Satan's favorite company, that's me.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

International replies are fine; as for self-employed, one purpose of the survey is to look at coworkers and supervisor relationships, so I'm not sure someone who's self-employed would be as able to respond. Thanks though!

And yes, I got the long story about Dollar General. That sounds like an awful job. :( Glad you seem to like your current position a bit better.

Question 2 for unemployed. None of the answers applied so i wrote in my answer in "other", but it is requiring me to check one of the other choices.

Okay, I just looked at it, and I think for some reason it wasn't reading "Other" as one of the actual choices, so the fact that I required an answer to the question was causing issues. I've changed that now (and will just have to trust people not to skip), so it should be good to go. Thanks for letting me know!

Responded to your survey. I'm glad you're trying to raise awareness of ASDs in the hiring process. On a related subject, I wish HR departments would stop discriminating against the long term unemployed, since it is an issue that is pertinent to many people on here.

I had issues with that too... you just need to check mark "other" as well as put your reason in the text box and it lets you move on. The check box is hard to see in the layout of the question.. but it is there :)

Just filled it in. I had some trouble filling in the questions that asked if my co workers/manager are understanding of my needs. Nobody knows i have AS there so i just filled in those answers in the middle.

I really appreciate all the replies I've gotten. :D The responses to the final question have been particularly fun to read through. Also, special thanks to Valkyrie for helping solve the issue with the "Other" option.

If anyone wanted to be really extra super awesome, it would help me out a ton if you were to pass these surveys along to anyone else you know with AS or HFA. I currently have 15 completed responses on each, which is fantastic (and more than I'd hoped for), but even more data to analyze would be great.

Thank you all!

I hope you'll make a donation to Wrong Planet for using their site to gather for your polls... *nudge*

I'm making no profit off of this study (except perhaps the indirect profit of my eventual earned income from whatever job hopefully results from getting my BBA next month). I posted the survey here because A) it's a convenient method of reaching far more individuals with AS than I know personally and B) I thought the topic might be of interest to a number of this forum's members. That said, I'm incredibly grateful to Alex and all the other Wrong Planet staff for the work they've done in building this site and the community within it. It's been an invaluable resource throughout both my volunteer work with autism and my realization that I'm on the spectrum myself. Someday when I'm not a poverty-stricken student, I hope to be able to give often and generously to this site and others like it. ;)

(I also fully intend to credit this site as one of the communities from which I gathered my data.)

You may also wish to contact autism hangout... and post it on Tony Attwood's site...
