So here is the situation,

I just graduated with a degree in history. Now my overall goal is to work for the federal government. I've figured out that based on where I live, (Cincinnati, OH). I could ladder at any retail company easy. The pay would be good but I would not have the time to go out and do other things as I would always be working on the weekends. To my knowledge nobody likes to go hiking or backpacking or caving on a Tuesday or a Thursday.

In fact I'd say that the chances of me getting a job in the private sector where I have weekends off to advertise and market myself to 20yr. college old girls is non-existent......HAHAAA. No that is not the only reason I want a government job.....Now obviously I would have to exclude certain government entities such as police, fire department, certain branches of the military, public transportation, political campaigns. I will more than likely start out as clerk in Veterans Affairs or maybe the DOD or some Air Force base working at a school that educates children of active duty service members overseas in place like Okinawa or Guam.

The pay won't be great but the benefits I think will cover up for that. It may not be what I went to college for but honestly what it will afford me to do combined with the benefits.....I'm not complaining.

I've been thinking about this issue recently so I'm glad I found this thread. To me the difference between the public sector and the private sector seems to be that with the public sector you're guaranteed stable work and it's harder to be fired on the basis of superficial social irregularities, whereas, if you're an A-player you would probably excel and be more suited to the private sector, on the cutting edge of a cutthroat industry, like, say, venture capitalism, with all its pecking order and chance to socially dominate.

I wonder why society doesn't simply induct people with poor social skills (but with otherwise good track records) into the municipal/government positions, and funnel the sociopathic and aggressive types of people into the private sector. Wouldn't society, as a whole, run so much smoother from this?

Government, especially the federal government, is a good place for aspies to work. When your boss or whoever gets pissed at you for being yourself, you cannot be summarily fired or even generally mistreated the way you can in the private sector. If you work for a govt agency, there may well be an EEO office in the same building, and if you are treated unfairly all you have to do is walk down there.

The way the courts look at it, a federal employee has a property interest in his or her job and cannot be deprived of it without due process at law. This level of protection is unheard of in the private sector.

I don't think I'd want to work for the federal government.

I think you should go with the job that gives you the best benefits. I would hate to work weekends too.

Believe me, it sucks. Even at a municipal job.

Working weeekends is a double edged sword. It can suck, but it can also be glorious.

I've been to amusement parks on weekdays and walked right up to rides, I've been on weekends and not been able to ride rides because of 2 hour waits.

Same with other places, on weekdays, no lines, on weekends, cars lined up out the street to get to nature areas.

Why as a history major would you look at retail?

Government can be a double edged sword too. Yes, you have job security, but so does the lazy f**k who spends all day gossiping and running his/her mouth.

So the lazy people are a third type. I wonder where they would be placed under the system I proposed earlier...
Lazy people aren't confined to the private sector only however.

Government is not necessarily secure, many agencies have been hit by furloughs.

I am a federal government employee and do recommend it for people on the spectrum....if they can get in. It can be pretty difficult for a non-veteran or member of some other status group [full disclosure...I was hired into my job through Indian Preference] unless you have specialized skills---like being a doctor, nurse, or some other type of professional that would not be coming in at entry level.

If the economy improves, it may get a little easier to get a foot in the door. Over the past few years a lot of people have been going for these jobs who normally would not have considered them.

Oh no, but in the private sector, you can fire the lazy quickly. In the government they tend to just exist.

In that case I am fortunate. Because not only do I have disability status, I also have veterans status as well. See I went into the military before I was diagnosed and toughed it out. Glad I did too

I love working for the government. My bosses only make three or four times what I make, they have to show up like I do and deal with the same daily crap. I like being paid for my overtime, and having benefits like a proper pension plan and sick leave and medical insurance.

It used to be that one didn't get wealthy off government work but it did provide security and a respectable retirement. Nowadays the private sector sucks balls and people wrecked by the false promises of the high flying one percent want us slow pokes in government workl to be dragged down to theie level. I hope they don't succeed.

I work in the private sector, and I have an excellent benefit plan and insurance as well as decent pay. I am treated fairly well by my boss and co workers. It is possible that my current work environment is also setting me up to succeed since I work alone in the back and there is no time to stand around the smoke area or coffee pot to gossip. We are very busy most of the time due to the oil industry.

I'm not saying every private sector job is terrible. Some of the things I post are based on my environment and what I see.
