Or, to quote the answer comedian Paul Lynde gave to the question "How goes the rat race?" He replied in a very sarcastic leer, "The rats are winning!"

My goodness! What happened to the forgiveness spirit that used to infuse businesses? Screw up a reservation and get canned? That's not fair. Suppose the world was like that?

Today I arrived early for my medical appointment at 2:30. I checked in with one receptionist then at patiently in the waiting room. At 3pm, I said to another receptionist, "Hi. Did they forget me? My appointment was for 2:30."

She checked some papers and made a phone call to the back. Sure enough, they forgot about me. (Story of my life right there).

I guess the lady who checked me in forgot to notify the attending staff that I was here, I don't know. But if we were to discipline everyone for tiny mistakes there'd be no employees left.

That's the whole gist of modern employment. Instead of being a valued employee, you are now nothing more than a side of beef, to be discarded when outdated. Unfortunately, the idea of employees being nothing more than an useless expense that needs to be eliminated has been the standard now for the last 25 years.

I have worked in 4 hotels - the last being a seasonal job for the last three summers. It is NOT a simple job. The multitasking involved is pretty intense and it is so easy to mess up a reservation if you have to stop and answer the phone or run and get a pillow for a guest. It took me a long time to learn coping strategies. Fortunate for me my boss realized quite fast not to throw out my sticky notes with my doodles on them lol. My doodles always had meanings and were important reminders what I had to finish.

but learning to do that among other things took a lot of time - it is your boss here that is the issue, not you. He should not have a right to fire you over one botched reservation. Everything is fixable - one way or another... even if you have to do a free upgrade for a room or throw in a free breakfast. No real biggie. I am very sorry they have made you feel bad. They do not have a right to do that.

Keep your head up - you survived a rough day of work. Aspies really should not get multitasking jobs... I am a cashier now... as long as it is consistent beep beep scanning I am all good... but people always have to ask questions lol... so maybe cashiering is out too lol... wish I had great job advice for you...

Hope your next job is easier for you.

i do appreciate that this type of position can be pretty busy and challenging. i've actually done a lot of secretarial and reception work. this particular job, though, is basically just checking people in and giving them their room key and is pretty simple. the problem really lays with their abysmally poor communication, especially for someone like me who needs everything laid out; but the 20 yo i was subbing for didn't seem to have a problem, so i can't blame it all on them.

not 100 percent sure now if it was all me, although they blamed me; just found out the owner is about to have both motels repossessed and they've locked his business accounts. with the closing of national parks and loss of business, i think it's only a matter of time, maybe weeks at this point. so maybe it was just an excuse to cut payroll. pretty sure his wife is handling the job now.

thanks all for your posts and support, it was a pretty awful week.

They did you a favor. I have been at a couple of business owned by solo proprietors as they closed. When you see employees called into the office wondering if they are becoming ex employees then they are. When you see them taking out stuff that was the owners vision, pride and joy. Then your own horrible awkward termination conversation with the proprietor.
