It seems to me you've had a few too many people telling you what to do, so I shall attempt to alleviate this by informing you that doing whatever the frack you want is a pretty great way to live, provided it doesn't interfere with others trying to do just the same.

However, in the strict context of finding work, I think it often helps us shy types to be more discerning about what types of work we seek out. Being quiet and reserved is a great asset in the right scenario.

I'm not one to be giving advice since I don't work and don't know how to find a job either but I'm shy too. All I can think of is to try to find jobs to apply for where you won't have to work with customers and few if any coworkers. I once had a cleaning job where except for school breaks I got to work alone all the time.
