For the drug users, what to say at the job interview.

When the person giving the job interview says there is a drug test for the job, smile and say, "cool, I'll test any drug you put in front of me."
That will get you the job, hands down.

I would consider such a comment superfluous to requirements in a job interview .

That you submit to the test, is all that is required. It is like telling a policeman, when asked if one has been drinking, that you have indeed been drinking that evening......drinking water. These kinds of comments get people with asperger's into difficulty ~all the time~


It is a somewhat funny comment, but some members of this site ~may~ take you at your word

That's what i would do...But first i would say "If you put any poisen or Viagra in frount of me i will kick you in the balls and stick it down YOU'RE throught!" Anyone for getting fired before you get the job?

Regarding drug tests, is this something that is required for almost all jobs? Or is it just certain ones (like the lower paying variety)? Is this just a US thing or is it in other countries like Canada and the UK?

I would be very offended if I was required to do something like that, because I have never used drugs (including smoking or drinking alcohol). The thought of the actual drug test - you know what I mean - also makes me angry to contemplate, like being a slave on an auction block.

The best response to being asked to do a drug test a simple "OK". Given the laws in the US, people take drug usage way too seriously. So act accordingly.

Hehe, that's funny. As Brendan said, this is meant to be a joke. Don't say this in an interview unless you really don't want the job. In the US it's pretty common these days for employers to do drug testing. Ironically, I used to work in the IT department of a law enforcement agency and never got drug tested there.

'If you use drugs we won't let you work here!'
'Fine, I'll just break into these six houses to get my drug money then!'

I wouldn't work for a company that tests me (unless the pay/benefits were amazingly good), despite the fact that I don't do drugs. It seems like an invasion of privacy and I've heard of false positives causing people to lose their jobs.

Plus, I have a cappuccino and a poppy seed bagel with cream cheese for breakfast every morning and I heard rumors that poppy seed bagels could cause you to get a false positive for opium. I'm not going to break my morning routine to take a drug test.

You know, I might actually try this. I'm terrible at job interviews, so I take any interview I am offered, even if I don't want the job, just for the practice. The more interviews I do, the easier it is to stay calm, act confident, and answer stupid personality/behavioral questions without stuttering or stammering. So if I'm doing too well I'll just drop this drug test bomb to make sure they won't offer.

Totally agree, Alex. As long as I'm not "high" on weed (essentially thats all drug tests look for) WHILE working, who gives a s**t? If we're concerned about it, we should test people WHILE they work, not before they even have a job.

If I hear drug test, I get up and leave. Too bad, they lost an extremely efficient and hard worker over something irrelevant.

In such circumstances, an employer doesn't see you as a loss to the company. They think to themselves "There goes another drug-user. I'm glad I didn't give (him/her) the job".

You may well be an extremely honest, hard-worker, who gets things done quickly and efficiently.
Unfortunately, walking out on a drug test screams "Drug User!! !!", not "Hard Worker". If you want the job, you'll take the test.

Remember- the employer doesn't ~have~ to employ you. In the case of your refusing a drugs test, they will simply employ someone else who ~will~ take it.

Drug testing for prospective job applicants is fairly common in the USA. However, in Canada, the Canadian Human Rights Commission has declared that random drug testing is an invasion of privacy except in occupations where there is a legitimate public safety issue to consider (eg, long-distance truck drivers, law enforcement officials).

A company I used to work for that has operations in both Canada and the US, its US employees all have to take a drug test as part of their hiring process, but its Canadian employees do not.

Me, I would flat-out refuse to take a drug test if my employer asked me to. I'd fail, because occasionally I take pain killers that include small amounts of codeine. Of course, since I have a desk job, the chances of me being asked to take a drug test are nil.

You're right, he doesnt have to employ me but there are many companies in my city who will.

I've taken drug tests for a job, but I don't mind as it's extremely common and I have wanted the job bad enough to go ahead and take the test. I have nothing to hide in the first place, and often, the lab worker will ask if you're taking any prescription medication, so they don't count that if it shows up as a positive. Besides, they're testing for marijuana and other illegal drugs.

To me, a drug test is similar to a background check, which most companies do when they hire a new employee. I don't have anything to worry about there, even if they check my driving record as it's clean. I'm working for a temp agency, and the only thing they had me do was to fill out some paperwork for a background check.

If you don't want to take a drug test, don't apply for any retail positions, as they're among those who require them for those who are hired. They and other companies who require drug testing usually state that on the application, so the best thing is to find companies who don't require such a test. However, nearly all companies do background checks, which is why they ask if you've ever been convicted of a felony on the application.

ADoyle is most likely right; any prescription medication that you consume would probably be taken into account by your employer.

One must remember that, in the majority of cases, persons taking pain medication would not be ingesting very large amounts of scheduled drugs. For example; In Australia, a common over-the-counter Paracetamol/Codeine analgaesic would likely only contain a maximum of 10mg of Codeine. This may often be barely enough to relieve a mild headache, let alone render you "high".

In order to produce a pronounced narcotic-induced "high", a person would likely need to ingest far greater than the 10 or 20mg of codeine present in one or two such tablets as I have mentioned.

As far as I am aware, a drug test whose purpose is to screen for narcotics abuse (Morphine, Oxycodone, Buprenorphine, Fentanyl, etc) would probably barely register the codeine contained in a standard 500mg Paracetamol/30mg Codeine preparation.
