I work for State Farm and made a lateral move to a DB2 DBA position. It could be a significant promotion as DBAs make more money than people in my old position. I've had problems with getting jobs/new positions before and this is the best one yet! Hopefully my strong technical skills will be more recognized and I will advance farther than in my old position.

Sounds swell to me!

You belie the stereotype that Aspies can't succeed in employment.

Awesome.

I'd appreciate hearing how you adjust to the role. I'm still considering making the attempt, once I get some more real-world SQL experience under my belt.

The DBAs at my current company, and my last one, all work over in another building without any non-IT divisions in them. They're much quieter and less brightly lit.

:-/ I HAVE heard horrible things about the bathrooms from maintenance and security, but, only the men's room, so hopefully it wouldn't impact the ladies.

I haven't started officially yet as I need to transition my current work. I'll admit being both scared and excited. Scared since I'll be the new guy who needs to learn a lot instead of the being the expert in my particular area. Excited because this position will be a gateway to much better experience and earning potential than my current role.

Keep the faith, my Aspergian brethren! We can all make progress with hard work, patience, and a little luck!

Cool. Oh yeah, I *definitely* know that feeling. I was so petrified starting here a year ago, after being the expert on all things in my previous job (of 13.5 years), being clueless again was pretty intimidating.

:D

I can't imagine what I'd think if I would obtain a brand new job after 34 years of experience with my old one!

I'd be so confused!

Today I finished my first week as a DBA and it went well. I get along great with my mentor and did some real DBA work with excellent results. This team is much more technical than the previous one and I think I'll do fine here.

Awesome! Glad you're getting along well with your mentor.
Having one manager here that I get on pretty good with has been vital to me settling in.

Congrats! Good work on a lateral move. I have been told those are more effective job changes.

Good for you krampus. Go for it. Ignore people who try to rain on your parade. I am really glad for you.

Thanks for the support. I got some positive feedback already. Looks like I'm a natural DBA.
