We could do the job, but we can't get past the first hurdle. Nobody would employ a weirdo who doesn't respond to social cues. The employer would think the aspie is low functioning and would not give him the job.

I think I got my first (and only) job because at the interview I told my employer, at an educational establishment, that one of my main interests was football (it turned out he was obsessed with the game, more interested in it than in academic affairs). Also it would only cost half as much in salary to employ me, as a 22-year-old, than the person I would be replacing. I still ended up having a nervous breakdown though, trying to fit in with the rules and hierarchical structure of that job, and trying to relate to and deal with people in general.

Also, despite the fact that I apparently scored higher marks, in all of the seven written papers of my University entrance exam, than the thirty-odd other candidates, I was later told that I almost talked the selection panel out of offering me a place at my interview, by either saying the wrong things or not saying anything at all  .

At least you're aware of the issues, Cockroach 96, and can think about some strategies to deal with them. When I was your age, and for many, many years after, I couldn't make head or tail of my 'issues' and had no conception of how others saw me.

I second everything that DeepHour said. It's not just aspies, either. Ever tried being a black guy trying to get a job? What about trying to get a job and your address is in a known drug area? It's harder to gain employment when you're a minority, but with extra effort you can do it and have a pleasant, comfortable life. Lots of aspies and auties can and do.

Much to my surprise, I have been invited to an interview on Monday. Yet my highly flawed intuition is extremely doubtful that the position is right for me. It's my own stupid damn fault because I didn't read the vacancy's advertisement correctly. One of its wide array of responsibilities, which must have escaped my carelessly inattentive eyes at the time of completing the application, is to meet and greet customers; something of which I simply cannot do.

I cannot decide whether to cancel or not.....
