Autism in the UK Police Service & launch of the NPAA
Hi all,
Just thought I'd give you the heads-up about a new UK-based police support group - the National Police Autism Association (NPAA).
The NPAA supports UK police officers and staff affected by ASC, AS and related "hidden disabilities" such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. We are there for officers and staff who have the condition themselves, or who care for family members who are affected.
A key message we want to get across is that there are people with AS and high-functioning autism in all walks of life, including as police officers.
A little about me - as Chair of the NPAA I am a frontline UK police officer. I was diagnosed with AS after eight years' service. Being a police officer with AS hasn't always been easy - with me the difficult part has always been being accepted by other officers and fitting into the social scene at work. Actually doing the job - working with the public - is a walk in the park by comparison.
We have a Twitter feed, "Police Autism UK" @npaa_uk - you can find our website URL there as being a newbie I can't post it here!
Any questions, just ask.
