I just ask because I get the feeling my short term memory is particularly bad, while my long term memory is probably about average. When I'm at work and doing small, miscellaneous tasks I always have lists and such to keep track of what I need to do and what I've done. When I'm finished with a group of tasks I throw my to-do list away, but I feel like I might as well have thrown my memory of it away - I struggle to remember the particulars if someone wants further information. Like there's only enough room in my head for a certain amount of stuff, and the new stuff just knocks the old stuff out as soon as it comes in. Luckily because all of the work I do is electronic, I have the files I've worked on and can pull them up to refresh my memory... but I still feel like I struggle with this more than most people.

Have any of you noticed that you have a worse (or better) memory for certain types of things than NTs?

I Think my short term memory is below average. I am told to have a very good long term memory. I forget things that are not important such as completed tasks. But now I think it is wise to have two lists. A list of new tasks that I must do, that I am working on, or that are suspended, because I need interaction with the person that gave the task to me, such as additional questions and deadline date/time. The tasks are listed in order of deadline date.

A second list of completed tasks. I also write down if a tasks was completed too late, and what the cause was.

On my smartphone's diary I write everything down. I have a home tasks list such as a shopping lists, extend the expiration date of my driver's license, etc.

Short term and long term memory operate completely separately from the brain which is why most people who have bad short term memory often have good long term memory. My short term memory is dreadful. I have a very hard time taking verbal instructions without being shown how to do the job. I need to be able to either write everything down so I can study it to see what has to be done or do certain tasks repeatedly by myself at my own pace before I am able to get it right. But at the same time, my long-term memory is excellent and I can remember things visually and once I get good at a job, I never forget anything and can master it. In fact, I miss nothing and can become really detail oriented.

Whenever my dad asks "What have you done today?" I'm never able to recall, it takes me a minute to remember something and up to an hour to remember telling him the remarkable or important things.

Although I don't trust my short term memory very much and I avoid forgetting thing to write them into my computer or smartphone, my short term memory is better than I thought. I appear to remember more things (that are said just once and not repeated) than I thought.

I think I just have a very selective memory.

Fairly bad for immediate events.

Example: I tend to think that I parked the car in the previous day's location, rather than today's location.
