Does calling back and following up ever really help?

My job coach keeps encouraging me to do it and is upset that I'm too shy to usually do it. I have this fear inside my mind that if I call to check up, I might sound too nervous and that that will be a turn off and that it will do more harm than good. Plus, some of the places online don't really list a place to call. I often think that following up usually doesn't help much, and, if I do it, I would prefer it via email. But she wants me to do it via phone calls.
Well, I will say that in my experience, calling back and following up has helped me, and very rarely has not doing so landed me a position. It gets the employers attention and shows initiative, and if you are the only candidate that does it (which I think is likely) you will have some luck. Phone stuff is scary, so yeah I understand where you are coming from. If you do muster the courage to try it out, I would highly recommend it. The worst that could happen is they would not hire you, then you probably wouldn't even have to speak to that person again ever.
