Upwork is this website where complete strangers offer jobs to other complete strangers. Most of the work seems to be coding, although I'm interested in the more literary stuff like writing and copy editing. The trouble is that I have a very hard time trusting anyone on the internet if I cannot see their face, and I need absolute trust before I enter any arrangement involving money.

Has anyone here tried this site? Are the obvious drawbacks outweighed by advantages? Have you got any tips to avoid being exploited?

I helped someone run an online store through the site. You can usually tell if someone is legit if they register your payment information through Upwork, then it gets taxed. Beware of ones that say they'll pay you via PayPal after doing work. Normally Upwork logs your work remotely and you still get paid per hour, because it logs all the activity you do at your computer while working. Beware of clients who refuse to work like this.
