Would it be appropriate to apply to this job?
Recently I came across a job advert for one to one tutoring. The job role is to work with students who were disengaged with the school system. For example, challenging behaviour or mental health issues. Going into detailed it mentions the reasons for student’s exclusion/absent from school such as 'school refusal' and 'aspergers'. Reading these two disorders really resonated with me. In addition to my aspergers diagnosis, I was absent from school during nearly all of my teenage years.
Fast forward to my early 20's, I returned to education, went to university and currently work as a fully qualified classroom teacher.
The reason I have posted this topic is that I am afraid of being frowned upon, if I were to disclose my mental condition and my past experience. Although I have had some success, I do struggle with my job at times and spend the majority of my time isolated at home. I keep thinking of the phrase 'you can't help others, if you can’t help yourself'
If you were the parent of a child who had difficulty at school, would you want someone like me working with them?

I think it is best to apply without disclosing autism.
You may want to say that you were also away from school during your teenage years, so you can relate to the students from that experience.
This may be a plus, since you had same experience and succeeded in your education later.

Sometimes the best way to help yourself is to help others..

If you treated my child with respect and understanding and helped them begin to succeed in school in a way neither i nor other teachers could, i'd be elated.

I agree, I would not disclose being on the autism spectrum. Are you opposed to lying a little? I think it would be helpful if you could say that you have a relative on the autism spectrum. This is a good way to explain having a lot of knowledge about autism and how one can relate to another autistic person and their specific learning issues. I have seen people do that before and it's surprising how easily it goes over.
Please do look into this. There aren't enough tutors. You could make a big difference in someone's life. I know people who went to college after tutoring, who said they otherwise wouldn't have. People who thought they were dumb until a tutor showed them that a different way to do something. And it's great self esteem building for the tutor! Not to mention a thing for your resume!
