Not sure where to post this but it happened at work so I will put it here. Do you guys lose stuff even when you haven't moved from the place you are at? I frequently lose pens, pencils, etc. that have been sitting right in front of me. That's no big deal. But today I lost a check. I was just sitting at my desk, had not moved from that spot. I spent hours looking everywhere in the desk, on the desk, under the desk. I went through the trash basket under my desk. I opened up about thirty envelopes that I had gotten ready to mail to see if I had accidentally put it in one of the envelopes, but I did not find it anywhere. I am so frustrated. Today I am in the "I hate being me" category and the "Someone else should be doing this job because they would be much better than me" category.

Yes, all the time. It's because my mind is somewhere else when I'm doing something, and I'm not consciously aware of where I put things. Usually I find whatever it is fairly quickly.

Sometimes I lose things for months and don't find them until I have stopped looking and stumble upon the item accidentally.

Yes. Personally I'm sure it has to do with a combination of my lack of short-term memory, and my inability to multitask. For example; if I put a clipboard down somewhere then someone talks to me, I'm so distracted by the person talking to me that I'll forget I just put it on the table next to me. After the conversation I'll wander off, distracted by something else, leaving it there on the table. Later I'll be confused looking for it thinking, "I swear it was in my hand 5 minutes ago!".

Yup, all of the above sound very familiar to me. Sometimes, I even "lose" smaller objects by already having them in my hand, using them as a fidget toy - I can continue to look for ages before I realise I never lost them to begin with.

Always. It actually seems to be getting worse recently, but that might just be because I have to remember a lot more things.

It doesn't matter how organised I try to be, you can bet that every day there will be a desperate last-minute search for my keys or my mobile phone even though they're right in front of me and my husband finds them in seconds. If I lose something I can search through my bag five times and miss what I'm looking for completely...but it's in there.

Today I put my purse in my bag. I was so adamant that I didn't want to forget it that I then checked my bag again. Definitely there. I went and found a few more things to pack. Checked again, still there. Left the house. Walked for two hours. Went to buy some lunch. I'd left my purse at home...despite checking twice. I don't even know how it all happens any more.

I found the check! I looked at the company's bank account online today and I saw a $200 credit ( which was the amount of the check) I guess what happened is that I took the check to the bank with my last deposit but failed to list it on the deposit slip. Glad that mystery is solved. I'm feeling a little less upset tonight, but it was a stupid mistake on my part.

I'm glad that you've solved the mystery :)

I think everybody makes a stupid mistake once in awhile. I know I do.
