The problem with my job search is there are few to none long term or permanent jobs I qualify for in my field. Most of the jobs are seasonal. And most of those require you to be physical and I cant. Most require a car and i have a license but cant afford a car without a job. And almost all outside my area. And some of those have housing but can't bring my husband... then there is SSI and Medicaid to worry about.

I want to work despite my limitations to get out of this poverty rut, but why does it have to be so hard?

Where I work a lot of folks start out in entry level jobs for which they are over qualified, and then move up into better jobs as the positions open up. We even look in house for signs of writing skill--so we can promote them to jobs that require writing--this is a surprisingly difficult skill to find.

I think Aspies should look first for a proper work environment--the field or name of the job isn't as important as meeting basic needs like your ability to get there and work there without undue stress. Which is exactly backward from the way a lot of people approach getting a job.

I can't find any decent jobs for which I have the qualifications that they want. They are all easy jobs that require little intelligence, but they always want a person with experience or knowledge of certain software. It's ridiculous.

They must expect that applicants are going to be so stupid as to be unable to learn to use the software or other aspects of the job in a reasonable amount of time. So I won't even be considered for any of these jobs, despite the fact that I probably already possess most of the required knowledge, and could learn the rest within a week or two.

These are crappy, low-paying jobs. Not minimum-wage fast-food crappy, but certainly nothing that should require a degree beyond high school or any kind of certifications.

So I'm in a similar situation. I want to work, but no one will give me a chance. I also have physical limitations. I don't know why everything has to be hard, but it always has been.

Also I have a huge resume gap... the very few interviews I'm getting are because it has to do with something specifically with my past, though two were local jobs. One of the locals needed a car and the other they hired someone else.

I have a phone interview tomorrow. I got the interview because it has to do with a very specific bird I worked with before. But... would involve leaving husband for 4 months and I would not know what would happen to our medical.

When you say "medical," do you mean Medicaid?

How far from your home is this job with the bird?

What exactly is your field?

One of the reasons I moved away from Michigan is that most of the jobs there are blue-collar (e.g., Union-based labor). Even electrical engineers at the time of my move were not in high demand.

Medical does mean Medicaid.... husband very sick and losing some sort of medical coverage would be disasterous.

My field is research ornithology...

I had the interview but the guy was too nosey about the gap in my resume... he asked why I wanted to go back to work and I said "me and my husband need more money" I felt as if that was a bad answer.

It wouldn't be a bad answer for me.

But I guess you should have spoke about your love for your field.

I would say (yes, it's obvious!) that your priority, at this point, is to keep the Medicaid. If your state is not a "community property" state, he could probably still maintain his Medicaid, while you work.

Talk to a Medicaid lawyer about this--or go into a forum related to Medicaid. Name your state (that's very important).

And add to this my husband wants to move somewhere with a warm climate... that limits my possibilities even more if I abide by his wishes!

I applied for a couple jobs today, but it's two totally different timeframes, 2 months vs. 2 years! The little job I applied to because I sounded really qualified. But in the past that happened and I went to the job and was unable to do it! Another job I was writing up a cover letter and everything and I called and asked if I needed a car and the lady said yes and that was over with. On top of that, ive been getting more anxiety and even meltdowns.... bad for work.
