I just got hired with no experience at Walmart for an above minimum wage job in the bakery decorating cakes. Has anyone else worked as a cake decorator before and if so do you have any tips? I'm nervous since I've never decorated a cake with anything but a layer of frosting and fruit.

My daughter is a pastry chef and I've watched and helped her many times. What I've learned is that the stuff you will be doing at a Wal-Mart bakery is very simple. You'll just do about four or five different types of piping and won't have to deal with intricate stuff or fondant or anything else. I asked her what she would suggest and she said to get some piping bags and tips and look up some tutorials on YouTube and practice at home. Mainly rosette, scalloped edging, leaves, and writing. Buy or make some royal icing to use for it. You decorate with royal icing and it's the buttered that taste good that you frost the whole cake with. Different consistency. I'm not sure if the canned icing is royal icing or not, but you can find easy recipes for it online or Wal-Mart might have some already made over by the wedding cake supplies. They have canned fondant ready made there, although it's not very good. You just need the right consistency for practice though, the taste doesn't matter. Put out some parchment paper or wax paper and pipe the practice stuff on it.

Thank you, I'll look into the tutorials and getting some stuff for practice. I bake a lot at home but I'm not a huge fan of cake, so I don't have much experience with decorating them. And like most people, we keep bakeries in business because we don't have the skills to decorate a cake so we let someone else do it for us

I made a mistake there. Royal icing is for smooth writing or snoopy loopy things like usually on cookies and you decorate piping with other tips using buttercream. She said over by wedding cakes they should have cans of wiltons buttercream. you can pipe it out for practice of wax paper and then scrape it up and put it back in the bag and pipe it out again a few times. Get a small kit with a bag and a few tips to start practicing with. They will sell that at Wal-Mart too. If you have more questions or anything feel free to PM me and ill ask her.

She said get a set with metal tips and a few star tips. YouTube will show you how to fill and hold your bag and all too. She said she learned more from YouTube than from class. Also she said make sure your kit has couplers. She said don't feel bad if looks like crap at first because that's normal and also it's normal that it's hard to understand at first too. And if there is a Michaels store near you they have cake decorating classes and it's like 80 bucks. She took that class in high school before she went to college and learned all the advanced stuff.
