Employer giving me 2 month notice discouraged
I love my job and feel like I'm excelling at it, with one exception. I have to make a pizza in under a certain amount of time or I'll be fired.
My employer is aware that I'm Autistic and that I'm a slow learner. They have given me three months to meet a goal time of 2:40 or I'll be fired on making a pizza. I hit the three minute mark but apparently they aren't satisified.
We've (my parents and I) have threatened to sue them. Before you all hate on me for this, keep in mind that my employer knows I'm Autistic.
I didn't disclose it on the employment form because in previous jobs, I've never had anything like a timed test and my Autism didn't really hinder me from anything. We had a talk and my parents have mentioned my medical diagnosis of Autism.
Now I'm seeing that it clearly is hindering my effort. But with my employer being aware of EEO and ADA don't they have to keep me? Don't get me wrong, I know I'm an at will employee and I love my managers and coworkers. This is by far the best job that I have had. Management has treated me with respect for the first time in my work history.
I can do everything from answering phones (struggled at the beginning) and clean and drive for them.
Now I'm in danger of losing my job simply for not being able to shave half a minute off my time. Being Autistic, I have the need to look at the ingredient amount while making the pizza since I don't have that great a time when it comes to things like puzzles, which a pizza really is.
I'm discouraged and depressed. I just got my life back together after being unemployed and homeless for 2 months. My friends were great in letting me stay with them (in case you were wondering)
Also, I noticed that a worker was suspended for something for a week, but not fired. I've never been suspended.
I'm currently looking for work between now and December. They have threatened to fire me at Christmas if I can't get the timing right.
They still have a help wanted sign outside.
Discouraged and depressed. Any help would be appreciated.
People think the ADA can force employers to keep them.
If you needed a low bench/higher bench, the employer has to do that for an accommodation.
You can't work afternoons because you have doctors' appointments then, the employer has to figure out a way to handle it, whether you taking flex time off or whatever.
The employer does not have to change the job description or create a "new" job for you if they don't want to.
You have to make pizzas under 2:40 minutes. There is no getting around that. If you hired to make pizzas, you have to do it. Some places (if they feel benevolent) might shift you to cashier/back room/anything else but pizza. A small place where every warm body counts, might not have that luxury.
My friend told her employer she has severe ADHD. She had a front desk job at a multiple doctors' office practice. It was way over her head, and they gave her 6 months to figure it out. Usually they only give new employees three.
They let her go after month 7 when she f****d up the voice mail system and messed up two days worth of patient scheduling.
She threatened to sue.
They said bring it.
Her lawyer said, in the end you still have to be able to do the job. Her work placed doubled the probationary period. She had a shadow partner the whole time. The employer did everything on their end. My friend still has to perform the job duty.
Listen, as an NT, I could never run a cash register. It is beyond me. Wouldn't matter how long I had to learn. My friend's job was timed/being exact/dealing with patients. She could not juggle answering phones, dealing with people at the front desk, and inputting patient appointments fast enough to keep everyone happy.
Your one last shot with this employer is offer to take a pay cut in exchange for no pizza making. If you are only receiving minimum wage, I don't know how they would fiddle with it.
I work 4 years at a chain pizza place. The only person who didn't make pizzas was the day shift handyman did maintenance. I sucked at the register, but could hustle making the orders. That was enough for them to keep me. Especially during the rush times of the day.
