In high school, I applied to 13 different businesses around town, sometimes more than once, over a period of two years and never got so much as a phone call.

Leaving an application with them is pointless. You 'll never get a job if you do that.

You have to go for these things when they actually need people, and if you don't live in a student town, apply when the students leave town to go back to study.

You need to ask around places, anywhere, and push for it.

I had difficulty getting my first job when I was 16, I tried at many places but with no previous job experience at all it was difficult. I eventually got a job at a grocery store.

Maybe this time of the year is bad for jobs? But with some places turnover is so bad that you are bound to get a job eventually if you keep at it.

For me, it's hard enough to actually get a job. And once I get one, it's even harder to keep it. It does not take a long time before there are problems between me and the others working at the same place.

I'm in a tough field. The only way for me to find another job similar to mine is to move out of market, and since I can't afford to do that (besides, I just re-upped my apartment lease for another year), I'm stuck looking out-of-field. Ain't easy to find something appealing, or sut'm that pays enough to survive on. Whatever I end up doing will be a compromise. I'm doing all the looking I can, but I have a bad feeling it'll be an office or warehouse-type gig. Off to the classifieds...

I was an Assistant Professor in Southern Ontario for a few years, and then was pushed out because I "was not very social" with colleagues. (Though it was also because I am straight and the department was very gay.) My previous school, where I got my doctorate, is also full of people who dislike me because I have no "savoir-vivre" (manners in the broadest sense).

So now, whenever I apply for a new job, my reputation precedes me, and the new prospective employer always hears "rumors" indicating "nah, you don't want that guy."

Does anyone know of French or Comp Lit departments in North America where AS is understood and accepted?

PM

i had a lot of problems getting jobs, just knowing how to look, what to look for, what i could do, etc.

until i found civil service.

i recommend it highly, especially for anyone with any social interaction problems etc.

basically, they hire based on your test scores and the tests are all very similar and reuse the same questions year after year.

your performance at the interview is not critical - they're used to odd people.

and once they hire you, if you do what the job requires, and it usually isn't too demanding, you keep your job. they can't just get rid of you cause they don't like you.

it's a godsend for me, even though i hate work. i need an income and it's a good ssecure one i don't need to stress about much.

google up the websites for your local, city, state and federal websites and follow the links to test apps.

it takes a while to get in (took me 6 mos to get a low paying entry level and another 18 months to get a salary i was happy with, but bennies start right away) but it was low stress and worth the wait.

also, lots of time off if like me you have problems tolerating too much human interaction and need alone time.
