I've been in a medical records job for 8 years now, and I'm mostly in my cubicle with stacks of charts and my computer. How much accommodation is reasonable to request in communication styles? I've asked repeatedly that others wave a hand to get my attention, as I'm usually wearing headphones and focused on a visual task. This seems to be too difficult to remember for most people. Switching from visual to audio mode isn't always quick enough, and I'm often scared out of my wits by the unexpected interruption(s). I don't want to be singled out for special treatment, but the frequent state of anxiety isn't helpful, either. Any suggestions?
