Once upon a job, I worked for a warehouse, and employment supports AKA Job coaches. This one time, one of them came to visit us and see how we were doing. All the while, they came up and their clients, including me what color they preferred. Blue or orange and wrote them down. When I asked why, she got smart with me and said, "Well, that's none of your business."

Why did she come up and ask us about our favorite colors and not tell us why?

Because she is a priggish person who doesn't believe that 'common' workers need to be told anything.

"Just answer the questions and do as you're told!" is the mantra of such people.

You hit it right on the head as she was weird and annoying. She also used me as a token by keeping me in the same job for 8 years so she could keep her numbers up.

Anyway, I do feel that as her clients, we had a right to know why she was asking her about opinions about colors.

It's quite natural to ask why when someone comes up to you and asks you a question as random as that. Even if they don't want to give you a reason, they could have just said, "it's just something we have to ask" or "no reason really, just asking" or something.

I remember when I was about 16 a friend showed me her bracelet, and I said, "that's nice, where did you get that from?" and she said, "none of your business". Well, if she took the trouble to show off her new bracelet to a friend then it is my business. Usually asking someone where they got something from is a normal thing to ask when someone shows you something of theirs. It's how conversation works.

She walked in with a notepad and asked us about colors and then put our answers down and asked: "Do you like orange or blue?" Even if she was doing something for a research project, she could have said, "This is something we are working on but I can't give you all the details. However, she was vulgar and annoying.

This is the sort of situation I would feel obligated to get obtuse in.

"Do you like orange or blue?"

"no."
