I'm 26. I am about to start my "career" in data analysis and work 9/5. This is obviously not my dream job but pays well. However, I expect the next few years will be miserable and I am scared to even think about it. I need a goal. So my goal is to save money and live on nothing so I can retire at the age of 30, live in a quiet cottage somewhere, be in control of my life/time and pursue my hobbies full time.

Is that completely bonkers?

It's not bonkers; there are a lot of people like you. Check out the "Mr. Money Mustache" blog and Youtube channel. If you want to be happy your whole life, instead of grinding your whole 20s away betting that you'll live to be 30, you might try another approach. Like, what if you rent a cottage, and work a 25 hour week at the IT stuff, and spend the rest of your time on your passion projects?

I will look into it.

Yeah, i'm scared of burning out. I am already pretty exhausted.

I guess I can work full time for a while then ask them to reduce my hours (having a disability should count for something?)

If that makes you happy then I don't see a reason not to aim for it, other than the possibility of something going wrong and not having a back up plan.

I don't know a lot about the IT field, but isn't that often something you can do from home, at least part of the time? Could you rent or buy a cottage and work from there and only visit the office every now and then when it's needed? This is, of course, assuming that the work itself isn't the stressful part for you but the social interraction and the like coming with it.

Unless you're Elon Musk, you're not going to make enough money in four years to retire on.

If it pays insanely well, it is not bonkers. Just note that life is more expensive than you know and random costs pop up from nowhere.

One alternative is to find that dream job and you'll go to work with a smile on your face and wonder why all others complain so much about their jobs.

Happiness > Salary.

This is fintech! This is in part anxiety talk because it's a new job and I have no knowledge of finance.

Maybe I'll enjoy the job. The social interaction is gonna be less stressful because at the moment I work in tourism and I am around people 9 hours straight. I think sitting in an office might actually be better.

looool I wish. but then again if you're Elon Musk you're not creating companies to go retire after 4 years. He clearly is addicted to his job.

I think I'd never want to retire if I were working in the arts.
