After trying to find work for years, both by myself and with a disability employment agency, I decided to fill some time volunteering. I went to my local second hand shop and asked if they needed volunteers. They gave me a card with a website address to go to for volunteers.

I filled in the online form and two days later the manager of one store rang me and asked if I could come in.

It's the Salvation Army (Salvos for short) and I've been volunteering there twice a week since June. If anyone wants routine, they won't get it with the Salvos, every day is different. Different customers, different people, different donations.

I'm wondering if any of you have volunteered before or are now. Did it result in a job? That's what I'm hoping for.

hello. i volunteer at Marine Conservation Society beach clean ups when they are around the town or a near by town/village and am volunteering with 'the naturalists', a group near by that plant butterfly attracting trees every winter by an old railway track... i volunteer/am volunteering mostly for experience. i volunteered to do gardening for a persons giant field once. i had to remove a lot of bramble bushes and the bushes roots and organise piles of scattered logs. he ended up paying me and it became a job, a few months later builders came and started dropping piles of bricks and wood were i was gardening and organising, messing up all my work, my masterpiece, so i stopped doing it... i'd definitely consider getting a large scale tree planting job/volunteer work.

I volunteer at my local crisis pregnancy centre taking baby clothes and items to the thrift store down the street. I also help out setting up and cleaning up at Pro-life events. Another thing that I'm doing is making blankets for pets, babies and children to sell to raise my own money to donate to the centre.

^I'm sorry to hear that.

@CockneyRebel, I never knew such a volunteering job like that existed. I have heard of volunteers making blankets and clothes for newborns though.

@jordanalmokdad, that field job sounds massive, what a shame someone had to come and wreck your work. Your job now sounds unique.

I used to volunteer once a week for LADS (Learning and Attentional Disorders Society), they're now called something else. I used to make up information packs for adults with ADHD, parents and teachers of kids with ADHD. I think I read every book in their library. It was a nice, quiet job.

None of the unpaid internships resulted in jobs either

City of Berkeley
Kichange currency
Aaron peskin campaign
East Bay Asian local development corporation
Bay bucks
Bart

Although they didn't claim they offer jobs

Whatever

You have to ask before you start volunteering if they might hire you

Or apply online

I do some volunteering in hobby events 2-3 times a year plus the time used at home to prepare for them but aside from that I haven't done volunteer jobs. I could try at some point, though if it became a routine then only once or twice a week since I work, too.

I have applied online for a casual job with the Salvos, with both a cover letter and a resumé. But they picked someone else.

Fireblossom, sounds like you do plenty especially if you're working as well.

I'm really glad to be at the Salvos, the boss compliments my work and the other volunteers are fun to be around.
