Since I can't work due to my disability benefits and lack of experience (not to mention being unable to drive), maybe it would be wise to go around my neighborhood advertising for small jobs to make a little extra cash to save up? Doing things like cleaning cars or cleaning up houses and yards?

I know that's usually jobs reserved for kids and teenagers, but I'm desperate for some financial independence...

Whar do you guys think?

I think it could, potentially, be a good idea. Especially if you get paid in cash so you don't have to report the "income."

Many people need their yards cleaned up, for example.

Are you able to do minor repairs in the home? (I usually have trouble with that)

I've never really learned how to repair things but that could be a useful skill to learn. :)

And I agree, getting paid in cash would be best. It shouldn't effect my disability benefits that way.

You also have to keep your temper under control when you do these jobs, and don't get affected by what your "employers" say.

You might run into jerks who will employ you.

The idea is to make money---not to make friends. Though making friends would certainly add to your reputation.

Just make sure you do the job right.

You want to acquire a good reputation, so you can get more jobs.

That's all very true...

I think I can work on it. :)

I need to make sure when I do a job it's one I actually CAN do. For example I can't do anything that will require driving. And I must have the right supplies to do the work.

I don't know where you live, but is it allowed in your country to work when you are on dissability? Because in my country it is not. Just something you might want to check

On SSI, if you make 85 extra dollars in a month, they don't take away any of your benefits.

And, of course, you could do work where you receive cash, so you don't have to report the income.

It should be ok as long as it's not an actual job. I'm just going around the neighborhood to clean people's yards to make like $50 or $20 or so in cash for doing it.

My brother sometimes pays me that way to clean his house, but I can't drive to his house on my own. So i figure it'll be more lucrative to make money in my own neighborhood.

Where do you live? In my country, you can get a bit extra cash by collecting bottles and cans from outside and returning them to the store... cans for examble are usually worth 15 cents, 0,5 l bottles 20 cents and 1,5-2 l bottles 40 cents. Not all bottles are worth money though and only specific shops accept certain kinds of bottles.

What you're doing----is what many people in other countries do---especially since they don't have "disability benefits" in those countries.

In New York State, you get 5 cents a bottle or can when you return the bottle or can for recycling.

Many people feel ashamed, in the US, of gathering bottles or cans. Many people think only "bums" collect bottles and cans.

Especially if they dig in garbage cans to collect bottles and cans.

I wouldnt feel ashamed to collect bottles and cans, but I live in a small southern town in Georgia and can't drive. I wouldn't know where to go to turn bottles and cans in for change, if we even have something like that where I live? :|

Big supermarkets usually have machines that take bottles and cans.

How far are you away from a big supermarket?

Here it's actually mostly an old people and kids -thing. Some of those old people have so small retirement savings that they don't have much of a choice, while some just want to save money wherever possible. For kids, it's a great source of pocket money.

The closest one is a Walmart Supercenter about 10 miles away. Does walmart do that sort of thing? It'd be great if they did. :)

I wouldn't know----but I wouldn't be surprised if Walmart had such a machine.
