Progessional model and having Asperger’s
Hello.
My dream job is to become a professional male model. I’ve been lucky to have been born with pretty good looks, and having a career where I can focus on my physical health would be a dream.
The only issue is that I do have Asperger’s. I don’t necessarily mind being the center of attention, I just mind if I constantly have to talk a whole lot with a lot of people who expect me to be able to have perfect conversations and be really charasmatic.
I feel like I would be extremely motivated and dedicated to my career, but my Asperger’s is making me doubt whether it’s a good career choice or not.
What do you think?
This is a rather late reply, but I think this is not exactly the best place to get advice for your career choice as the majority of us are incapable of even tolerating being the center of attention. However, if you are still looking for advice. I can say that most of the time as a professional model your interactions with people will be highly scripted, though I cannot be certain as I can only say what I think I know about the career from observation. However, I do think socializing would be a very large part of a professional male model's career, even if the projected persona is fake and scripted, you'd likely have to keep up social media accounts on twitter, facebook, and Instagram to have success in such a field. You'd have to make other model friends, go on trips to interesting places, act like you are an interesting person, get more fans and basically build a reputation. I do not think anyone with Aspergers would be able to excel for long in such a manner, but if it is your special interest, you might just prove me wrong, for us people on the autism spectrum our ability to devote time and energy to our special interest is unmatched, however, I believe you will still suffer deleterious effects from social interaction, even if you enjoy your work, you would need long periods of time to recharge and the long term effects of such stress might be bad, but at least you'd be happy doing what you love, that's a lot more than a lot of us can say.

That stuff Confused_sloth is talking about is for supermodels. You can be a working model without any of that. Just turn up on time, wear the clothes and look good in them. Or do the very simple acting required for TV commercial work. Most of the paid time is hanging around and waiting, so bring a book. It's actually a pretty good job for an AS person. I did it for years and still do occasionally, though I'm of course no longer getting the sexy young guy roles.

It's great to get an insider perspective, most people like me are only familiar with the supermodels as you say. Hopefully, the poster is still around and gets the help he wanted from your post.
