I’ve been working with Vocational Rehabilitation for nearly 2 years to find a job in a field I want. I’m looking for work in an office setting. I’ve worked with job coaches who are usually busy and don’t know much about autism. Now I’m self-advocating for a new autism evaluation in the hopes that it could provide more information to help me find a job, but VR doesn’t think it’s needed. My medical records are over 20 years old. Has anyone had similar issues? How did you deal with them?

Autism evaluations are usually expensive in the US, and are not covered by insurance.

You could participate in a research study on autism, where they might evaluate you for free.

My feeling is, honestly, that a formal diagnosis wouldn’t be all that useful.

Is VR trying to get you to take retail jobs?

No, but it’s been strongly recommended, because it’s one industry doing the most hiring during the covid-19 pandemic.

If you don't mind me asking, what state is your VR office in?

I've read that Washington's VR system is better than Oregon's in comparison, so good luck!

I don't understand why you think you need an autism evaluation. Do you not know your own work-related limitations? If not, can you not ask family, friends, previous employers/co-workers, or consider things you've struggled with in school, at home, or in the community that would impact work performance?

There are questionnaires and things you can find online to help you figure out what kind of vocational help you need or what kinds of jobs would suit you. If you have jobs in mind, you can read about the duties, skills, and education required for those jobs and figure out how you fall short (if at all).

I'm looking to get an autism evaluation because my medical records are over 20 years old. I know my work-related limitations, but I'm continuously referred to employers that often don't know how to accommodate me, even after I explain my needs. I'm not sure what online questionnaires would be useful to me. As for vocational help, I've recently been self-advocating for supported employment, but my efforts don't seem to be enough.
