I need something to do during the day and I got my van running good...

I found one job posting in the area that's very tempting. Part time, temporary plant research for MSU. The job site is about 1 hour one way commute.

Yes, I mostly work with birdies, but my past research jobs did require me to id trees... And I've studied plants independently, plants is another special interest of mine... Go for it???

Why not? What are the downsides?

My van is 20 years old... It might be too much for it to constantly drive that distance.

Have a mechanic look at it. There are still many cars from 2000 on the road.

That’s a cute picture :)

Van... It depends on the condition rather then the age. If it is mechanically sound then it should be ok. You could get breakdown cover for peace of mind (If they do that in the USA?)

Could you use public transport, and keep the van for close to home runarounds maybe? You might become less tired too, as driving an hour or more after a day’s work used to be pretty tiring, on top of the work day, and the hour commute in. That’s great that this position has opened up, and might be just perfect for you! :)

PS Love your new avatar pic! You look lovely!

Many places in the US have poor or no public transportation. A car is required in these places to travel long distances.

Yes, some places can be trickier than others. After driving through New York, then down to Connecticut, I vowed never to drive through New York again, so caught the train! Still had a fair drive to get to a train station though...

I would say go for it. Working at the university is a dream of my life. Except that in my case my field (theoretical physics) is very competitive so I don't know if it would ever come true. If I am very lucky I might get something at some low tier school. But you are doing so much better, you are getting into Michigan State which is a good school, so don't let this apportunity pass you by.

As far as driving, its all technical, you will figure it out. But as far as getting a university job, you were super lucky and you don't know if you will ever get that luck again. So take your job and figure out the transportation later.

Have you considered renting an appartment closer? Thats another option. And it will give you a chance for a change of scenary and to explore new area.

I didn't get the job yet... And there is no public transportation in this area... That is why the van is necessary.

I used to work for universities in the past, I worked for MSU when I got my degree there. I also worked for Penn state, Ohio State, Michigan Tech and a failed job with University of Illinois. I also worked for the non-profits National Audubon and Hawkwatch International... That was a long time ago however...
