I hear this trend of some businesesses acting like millenials don't want to work, we very much do we just want wages to afford a roof over our heads, is that really too much to expect. like sorry13.65 is too low of pay for a lot of people. It costs more than two incomes of 13 dollars an hour to afford even an apartment these days.

Why can't you whippersnappers just donate your time? It's not like you're busy raising kids or mowing your suburban sprawl lawns. And don't try to blame McDonalds and Walmart for their self-serve kiosks. They were anticipating how lazy and entitled you brats are.

PS: Get off my lawn.

But seriously, it's strange that expecting wages to cover both food and shelter is seen as an unreasonable expectation. It's like some people literally have zero consideration of others outside of how they might serve their needs.

Well idk millenials get told we are entitled just because we want basic things like a roof over our heads and food, which currently it's difficult. LIke just an easy go to to say we're lazy and bla bla bla but a lot of us millenials are struggling and its not because 'we don't want to work' we just need to make enough when we work that we can afford to live.

Absolutely. It's absurd. We get called entitled simply for wanting to have a standard of living on par with our parents.

Man I just wish I could get like 5 cents everytime someone mentioned entitled millenials, as Id have quite a bit of money by now all for being a lazy millenial.

ALso yes, it is absurd that people think it is entiteld to want a roof over your head and food, those are just err..basic things people need.

Frankly, the youngsters have heard this garbage from time immemorial. I’m almost 66, and I heard this bullsh!t since I was 15. Didn’t matter I had a very limited skillset. It got to be extremely depressing to hear that I had no experience, or being overqualified for the position. It all comes down to $$$. In short, the jobs are there, but employers want to keep employees in serfdom, rather than pay a decent wage. You know something is wrong when you’re applying for a menial job that requires 10 years experience, and a Master’s degree, for a piddling $5.00/hour.

Don’t even get me started on the state employment offices. I was never able to convince those officers of my qualifications. I always got the line if you only have part of the qualifications needed to do the job, don’t bother to apply, since you don’t meet the qualifications for the position.

I could go into a long description about how even workers' labor is subject to "Supply & Demand", but the bottom line would be this: Employers are not obligated to pay more than what is required by law, especially when the labor being provided requires only that the worker be of legal age, legally entitled to work, and capable of performing the labor.

Employers are not required by law to provide more training than that which is necessary to safely and legally perform the labor.

If you are one of hundreds of workers applying for a single job, each of whom has to offer only the same capabilities as all the rest, you will be offered the same wage as all the rest.  The employer will hire the first person who agrees to perform the needed labor for a specific wage.  Anyone who turns down the offered wage will likely not be hired.

Simple.

You say that no one wants to work for minimum wage?  Think again.  There are people who will accept that wage without hesitation.  As long as there are such people, minimum-wage jobs will be filled.  Only if every applicant turns down the employer's offer will the employer even consider raising the wage.

Now, there are two basic ways around this dilemma:

1. If you want a higher wage, offer something more than what all the rest can offer -- certified technical skills, for example -- when all the rest have no such skills to offer.  This is called "Common Sense".

2. The workers own the means of production, and share the profits equally among themselves.  This is called "Socialism".

The choice is yours.

I gave my employer 6 months notice before I retired. It has been five months after the job posting and the position still isn't filled, even though they opened up two similar positions in hopes of attracting at least one new hire.

I mean in all fairness I'd take $13 if it was a living wage anywhere in the US but that wouldn't even afford you a dumpster in the cheapest rural town.

Someone somewhere yonder said $300 after $100 in travel expenses a week is still $300. Sure but assuming I owe nothing on a car or house, that is still struggling for vehicle maintenance, food, utilities, etc. We just want to afford broccoli, not Starbucks (although thar would be nice too.)

This part of your comment made me 'lol'.

It is very true though. People are being priced out of even existing!

Apply for, obtain, and work jobs that pay more than that. Leave jobs that offer $13.65/hr unfilled. When they go unfilled for long enough, those employers will have to increase the wage they're offering in order to attract applicants & retain employees.

I didn't say make a career of it. I said do it if it's the only/best option you have Until you have a better opportunity.

At my lowest income point in my life I made a whopping $150 cash total per month. I had a roof over my head, food to eat, and $150. 100% of that $150 went into foods/herbs/natural medicines to improve my health as rapidly as possible in order to increase my capacity to work/earn. Levelled up, levelled up etc etc it's been a decade and I have 3 paid for vehicles, zero debt, the better part of six figures in cash and have had days where I've earned $1000 or so. But I didn't start where I am and I didn't get here by not doing whatever I Could do for whatever pay I could get until I could improve upon it.

Something is better than nothing until you can do something different to get something more. Rinse & repeat persistently; Relentlessly.

We live in a capitalist hell world.

100% true.

Average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in the city is now over $3000.

The only reason I can afford to stay here in the suburbs vs. either live in my car or plan an escape is because my father busted his ass for half a century to pay for a house and I have cheap rent in the family home, so I'm insulated from the craziness and can save my money towards other goals vs. hand it all over to a landlord/relocate somewhere else - but even other cheaper locations across the country no longer have anywhere near the same income : lifestyle ratio that my parents' generation had. Not even close.

And the wealth divide is rapidly increasing with more and more people falling under working class poor than since probably the great depression. Hell, I heard on the radio that families earning six figures in the Toronto area now qualify for subsidized housing via Habitat for Humanity. No joke. If you "only," make $100k/year for your family income you're poor enough for that in Toronto. Same s**t or worse in Vancouver, really, because prices are just as high and incomes here are lower than Toronto.

Ah well, can't do sweet f**k all about it. Just gotta work and play and live and carry on.

I agree with all that you have posted here. :)

Slightly off-topic, but I went to an interview recently where the interviewer had made no effort whatsoever. I got there, only to be told he hadn't read my cv and told me to summarise. Which, come on dude, really?

Then he asked me how much the job listing was paying because he hadn't seen it. So I told him what it said and he said that was too high. I - talk to your recruitment team then? I didn't set the salary. (Plus I've had interviews with companies that have offered more... so that's subjective).

What a mess. It was described as an admin job but when I got there it turned out to be project management and sales. That's not admin, sir.

It's always a pain when the job turns out to be different to how it was described. I'd like to work, but I would specifically like to work in a job that is how it's described!

In the graphic design world, it can be difficult since there's a lot of expectation.

Some places expect you to be amazing right off the bat, that as well as being the graphic designer, you're also the photographer and videographer and you can make 3d renders.

Which, in fairness, I am also good at photography, photo editing and I do have a bit of experience in video editing. However, I would have to learn 3d design depending on the type of render.

'So, are you going to pay me more due to the extra responsibilities?'

'Eh, well, what are your salary expectations?'

*Sighs* Could you not just list the salary in the first place? Why all the song and dance? I know I only have a year's worth of experience (and also a freelance business tbf) but come on, this feels like a deliberate attempt to underpay. You want me to say lower than what you had in mind. Yet I don't want to be cocky and overshoot. So we're stuck playing mind games.

Oh well. I have another interview to attend so I best get some sleep. *Sigh* Job hunting is a pain.

^ Job hunting is awful, particularly for most autistic folk.

Good luck in securing something that fits you. :)
