Last week, I interviewed for a job at a car dealership. If I got the job, I would have heard from somebody at the dealership.

I heard nothing. I didn't get the job. I have to rely entirely on my savings, and nobody will want to be my friend because of my school-related unemployment. My worst fears have come true.

Tim

I'm not great at getting jobs but my parents once told me that some people hiring expect you to write a "thank you" not to the person interviewing you(a week or so after)and let them know that you are very interested in the job. They get tons of applications and it's very expensive to hire someone, fill out all the paper work,do the benifits package,etc.....they want to know that the person they hire will stick around for a while....so you have to show how much you want the job(and can use the thank you note to resell yourself and how good you will be for the company.

In the letter you can remind them, when you met,how much you appriciate the time they took to interview(not everyone even gets an interview,so they must have thought you might be good for the job). It's not easy, but try and get into their head...who would you want to hire if it was your company?Someone dependable, who has "stick-to-it"attitude,likes the product they are sellingPersonaly,I'm not a good liar,I can only convince people of something if I really believe it....so,it helps if you actually like what you are selling. If we can direct our passion and enthusiasm into what we are selling,it becomes a natural thing to want everyone else to have one....passion sells.

So try and not give up yet.It may not be the best job fit for you but if you really want it....sell yourself, but keep your eyes open for other jobs. There aren't many jobs I havent done, construction to factory to social services and many of them are "entry level".There are even temp jobs(we call them rent a bum,but they are a foot in the door)that you might consider.Even a part time job will give you some experience and something to put on a resume when you begin looking for a job in your field after graduating....not working at all, even with the best school grades, makes it look like you are lazy.So dont rule out cleaning jobs or anything that will give you work experience.

Good luck

And it wasn't even a sales job, it was data entry.

find a different one. Keep applying until you get one. Pick things that you are over-qualified for.

Bad luck,Tim but keep trying. I've come to the conclusion that some
employers have their own agendas and don't always pick the best or most
obvious candidates.
I was out of work recently and beginning to despair because although I have
25 years experience in the freight business I wasn't even getting replies
to companies who advertised for 'experienced freight clerks'.I eventually got
a job when I least expected to be chosen.

I feel ya on this one Tim. I applied last Monday for a data
entry job. I was told to call them if I don't hear from them
by next week. I have been living off my savings for almost
a year because I can't find a dang job here. I am well qualified
for them, but I think it is because I am from California. No one
can figure out why I would want to move to Arkansas. I try not
to be too nervous and eager when I go for interviews but I am
anyway, no matter how hard I try. I have a feeling you will do
fine. The right job is bound to come your way soon.

Just keep at it. I've had three interviews in two, two and a half months time. I only heard back from one of them, and that was to let me know I didn't get the job.

I've been using google maps to find businesses close to where I'm currently staying. Any that have a website listed, I've checked for job listings. Today I've managed to get three applications in...which means of the grand total of seven I've submitted this week...I might hear back from one.

It is easy to get discouraged, but just keep sending out applications.

Plus there is talk of a recession, and I am even more worried because of that.

Does your school have a career counselor who could give you some ideas on where to apply?

Hang in there! Keep sending out resumes and applications. It's a numbers game. You only have to be lucky once!

I know from your other threads that you're at college, so maybe you could look into on-campus employment. The pay might be low, but at a lot of them, you can just sit at a desk doing something like checking people's IDs to use the gym while you study or go on the internet.

As far as job availability goes, those are the first jobs to go.

Its better to get the job in the first place then get made redundant, as opposed not to get it at all.

Tim,
Buddy, I've been down that path you took with the car dealership.
Hang in there man.
Keep sending out your resumes & applications.
Go to your school's career center & see if they can help you.

I already have a 2-year technical degree, and I think I was quite over-qualified for that particular job.

A thank you note is never a bad idea, but the guys at the car dealership probably wouldn't care either way. And don't wait a week to send it, they've probably already made their decision by then.

You probably didn't want to work there anyway. I guarantee they hired somebody with bigger breasts than you.

BubbaHoTep is totally right. Unfortunately, it's a numbers game. As soul-crushing as it may sound, you need to apply to everything under the sun, including jobs you probably wouldn't take even if they offered it to you. The hardest part is only hearing back on one or two out of fifty applications. But try not to get discouraged.

By the way, do you think you interview well?
