As you might have guessed from my title and the ocation of my posty, I am a meteorologist. A meteorolgist 10 years from now, in case you were wondering.

But there is always room for changes in the future. I just want a simple question answered before i choose it as my destined path...

I know for a fact that meteorolgists with a Ph. D in the US make a maximum of $51,508 in American currency each year when they first start. In American society, exactly how much money is this?

I don't want too much, but i need enough to live on, though...

Archmage,

How old are you now. If you are 18, I would suggest looking into getting an amateur radio license and participate in SKYWARN. You will be serving your community at the sametime that you learn the dynamics of storms.

There were two tornadoes near where I live the other day.

I'm obsessed with clouds and weather (especially cumulonimbus), I'm ultra obsessed with tornadoes and also deeply fear them.

You're obviously not planning to be on radio or TV for that kind of money. $50K's pretty damn good, especially for someone just out of school. It's about twice what a TV met would make in the typical market, and decent for any field.

I'll probably be one of the ones who actually predict the weather. That takes a litlle more education. The guys on TV just tell you what to expect... It's the ones not filmed and broadcasted that actually find that out.

That's more than 3x what my mom makes a year. And I'm lower middle class.

Thems are good wages. :D

I went to an open house for a well respected law school a few weeks back. They said starting salaries for new lawyers was in the 35K to 66K with 45-50 being a nice solid average.

So, about what a lawyer makes.

I wouldn't get out of bed in the morning for a meagre $50K....

Weather used to be one of my special interests, and still sort of is. I used to have to watch the weather channel, and I also wanted to be a meterologist when I was younger. I still want to be a storm chaser, maybe someday i'll take a trip to Kansas during tornado season, and do some tornado. I;ve never seen a tornado up close before.

I've once seen a funnel cloud but never a full-blown tornado.

You might want to check out TORRO. They are a UK based organisation dedicated to the study of tornados and storms. They produce a really nice journal every month. Their web address is

$16,000 a year to support a family of 4 is poverty level in America, so if you don't have kids, you'll be doing better than most people. I say the poverty level should be higher. $16,000 a year is terribly low for 4 people. I would guess that $51,508 a year is enough to support you and two others in a semi-comfortable manner. Really, that doesn't seem like much money though.
