Calling Places for Employment - Help me write the script!
Ok, here's the background: I am moving to my mom's in Orlando, FL after graduation for my Master of Library Science.
So, I am wanting to call public libraries before I move to see about securing employment beforehand. I am going to Orlando, FL during Spring Break - a perfect time to get in some interviews!
So, here's my script thus far:
"Hi. My name is Serenity Palmer and I am finishing my last semester at the University of Maryland and will have my MLS in May. Do you have time for a few questions in regards to employment?"
If no: "When is a better time to call back?"
If yes: "I am interested in public libraries. I was wondering what employment opportunities are currently available?"
Some where in the conversation, I could add that I am planning on coming to Orlando, FL for Spring Break and that I used to reside in Orlando, FL.
Any thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks!

Cold-calling is one of the most difficult ways on the planet to find work - Good Luck with that!
I'd check the trade publications - Chronicle of Higher Education is a good one, for openings for librarians. I would assume that there are other journals specifically designed for the librarians of the world - I'd look in them as well for actual postings for openings. Once you've targeted them, I'd suggest attaching yourself to a local professional organization in your field. Go to their meetings, "network", get to meet some folks who are already working in your targeted geographic area and organizations.
If you're just testing the waters at an institution that has not posted any job vacancy announcements, you might do the phone calls, introduce yourself, say you're interested in working for their organization, ask if they have or anticipate having any openings, and, if not, ask if you might have an opportunity to volunteer with them for experience? You could then mention that you'll be in the area soon and would just love to have a chance to talk with them....
Best wishes for a successful job hunt!
