Does anyone have any experience with working in a cubicle? I've read a lot of "Dilbert" cartoons, but I've never worked in a cubicle. I have worked in several large open-plan offices though, and I've often wondered whether a cubicle wouldn't be preferable.

I've worked in a "cube farm" before and I found that the additional walls can help. But, what is really good is having a "white noise" generator close by to drown out the chatter. I worked at a place where they had white noise generators and it made it nicer because you could have a conversation and people 2 cubes over could not necessarily listen in. Since then, I have had my own office and that is so freakn' much better though. I've seen aircraft hangers turned into great big "cube farms" and that is pure hell.

I work in an open-concept office cubicle, and whether or not I like it depends on who is working in the other cubicles in my office. I used to have coworkers who liked to play horrible Barry Manilow music every day. They were loud and obnoxious, and didn't really care that others didn't necessarily enjoy the noise. Also, I had coworkers who really didn't care about their jobs and couldn't stop complaining about everything and everybody. Now I work in a different open-concept office cubicle, but the people in there are much more agreeable.

I don't mind cubicles at all. I just put on my headphones and get to work. Besides - I've worked in an office before with a room full of desks where people sat across from others while working and it was aggravating. Someone would crack a joke and others would laugh loudly enough to disturb me, and it seemed like I was always trying to make sure I didn't accidentally stare at someone while I was lost in thought- they might think I was staring at them rather than through them. Cubicles offer more privacy. Granted, they're still noisy and not as nice as having an actual 'office,' but they're better than being squashed into a room full of desks.

I really love being in a cubicle. It really cuts down on the noise level and makes it so that I can tune people out when I need to (which is a lot). I used to work in an open floor plan - I really hated it.
