Does anyone volunteer? If so, where do you volunteer? Does anyone do this in lieu of a job?

Yes, indeed. I am an aid station captain at a hundred mile trail race in the mountains near my home. I have also volunteered for the Tour of California bike stage race in February. I have signed up to be a CERT (community emergency response team) member when my community starts it up this spring. If there is a disaster in this place, I want all the information I can get on it! I also help with the Audubon Christmas bird count and several small projects with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. These are all areas of my obsessions.

PS I hope I get medical control at ToC--I'd love to escort Alberto Contador to the pee-in-a-cup tent!

I volunteer at a soup kitchen, and I'm thinking of quitting that position and volunteering at a place that supports a cause that I believe in, whether it's protecting animals, saving babies, or finding a cure for cancer.
