My DVR intake person recommended I look into doing proofreading for college students and authors as a business instead of a hobby. This appeals to me because I enjoy helping people to express themselves effectively. My problem is that I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't know what an appropriate fee schedule would be. I don't even know if you charge by the word or the page? Would that be the end result of the words and page or the beginning words and page? Anyone here have some insights, maybe a website or resource to help me with these kinds of questions? Thanks. ;)

What people usually do to start a new business is call a few proofreaders and ask all those questions you have as if you were a potential customer.

Try to get some jobs through a publishing house - proofreading of books. That way you see how the publishing houses work and pay - and you have some references that you can show when you try to get extra jobs from private people.
Also, you should be able to define, in what way your service is better than the electronic proofreading a text-programme in the PC does - because that's what a potential customer wants to know.
