Hi people,

I am a recent college graduate (May of 2008) and took all summer to find a job. I finally landed one as a staff accountant for a small company.

Well, 6 weeks went by, and the job was nothing like advertised. I came in thinking I'd assist in financial matters, as it turned out I pretty much did nothing but administrative work. That, in addition to my poor attention to detail, made the job a 50 hour a week struggle.

Well, end of the day Friday, boss calls me in, and knowing full well I had no intention to make a career out of accounting (I was an Actuarial Mathematics major), she released me.

So essentially, I've three questions:
1) Is there any other, better way to find a job, other than simply throwing around resumes via email and calling after about a week?
2) How do you all try in making a good 1st impression with a potential employer?
3) What do you do to deal w/ the aspects of the job that you and all people with Aspergers are bound to encounter?

I am sorry you lost your job. And I am also sorry your working there was such a struggle. The best thing is you are not going to have to work there while you are looking for another job. I have found the best thing for finding a job is treating it like a full time job. That means you get up in the morning in the same morning routine, take a shower and do your grooming, get clean business casual clothes on and hit the computer and update your resume, and look for all the temp agencies in your area. Then go to them, show up suited up and give some face time with a job placement person there. Temp jobs are great! You get to see if you like the job, they get to see if they like you. And if you don't, then it is not forever, and if you do, then they can hire you on.
and the best thing about it is you can have a decent job within the week, usually.

so, don't succumb to the lure of sleeping late and watching day time TV eating bowl after bowl of Cheerios, get right out there, or inertia set in, and every day it gets harder and harder to get back into the work frame of mind.

Does all this tell you I have done it before? Yes, I have, and more times than I care to think about. I wish you the best!

Merle
