I work my share of OT. I like to do about two extra OT days a month. But lately other people have been sick or injured and my boss has always asked me to work extra OT days on my days off like the last 5 weekends I have not signed up for OT. I'm happy with the number of hours I work. I really don't need the extra money. But I work the extra days just to try and fit in. Everyone else on the crew works OT. They think because they need the extra money that everyone else does and is happy working OT. I'm not. I need my days off so i can recharge and get ready to work on my next sheduled day. I have to deal with the public at my job so I have to try and be civil and all that, no meltdowns or anything. The people I work with don't know about my AS.

Anyone else feel this way about work and if you don't work extra you feel like you'll be look down on and like you are not doing your whole part even though workign OT is not a requirement?

I must ask, what is ot? Is it extra days? If it is extra days, I can understand that you'd be frustrated by being asked to work when you're not supposed to be. I don't have the same experience (due to me being unemployed) though.

OT= overtime. Extra time you put in at work. You make more money. But when you work OT all the time it gets to me.

Making some overtime is considered 'showing that you care' by my boss. So I work some weekends to show my good intentions. But I keep it minimal, to get sufficient rest between the working days.

I'd have problems with that too. It doesn't give you enough time to recover and thus makes work that bit harder for you. I don't know how to deal with the problem though, so I can't give advise on it. I can say that I hope things get better at work for you.

Where I work we are expected to make ourselves available for overtime if required to meet a deadline. I don't mind this too much as I usually know a few days/weeks beforehand whether or not I need to put in extra hours and can prepare myself for it.

On the occasions when my boss corners me at 16:45 and asks me to stay over because 'something urgent has just come up' I get a bit more annoyed. I feel obligated to stay over and prove my commitment, but also stressed at my routine being messed up.

I'm not in a job where I do OT as such, any more.

In the past I'd get annoyed when I was required to do OT at no notice, or in one job, double shifts due to short staffing. In my current job, sometimes I've had to cancel plans due to last-minute after-hours commitments coming up at short notice. It's not so bad, but I could do without it.

A few years back I dated - or tried to date - a lawyer. Unfortunately she did criminal law and was on-call a lot. Things didn't pan out, in part due to me getting irritated by her splitting early in a date when she got a call. Let's just say that in two months we ended up ordering about half-a-dozen meals that we never finished (sometimes never started) and that I paid for.

I don't get much OT. When I was in a position to get it, I kinda liked it because I liked the economic boost, but I know what you're saying about it taking away your time.

I value MY time. I need MY time. I can't do without it on a regular basis without problems.

If I had to pull OT on a regular basis, I'd probably hate it.

I don't mind overtime, but with my new job, I'm lucky if I work 6 hours a week, since I'm still going through training, and things are slow. At this time, I plan to stick it out since I would rather have this job than not to be working, so I don't have another large gap in my employment history. I happen to be in California where we had record unemployment rates this past month, so the recession is still really bad here.
