In a typical undergraduate summer internship, what is the payscale like.

If I were to choose to work 40 hours, if possible, would I be paid for it?

Tim, that's going to depend on the field you're in, the organization, and the part of the USA in which you live. Many internships are unpaid. Many are not full time. When I was in grad school, I did one with a local city government there in Texas for what was basically minimum wage for 20 hours a week. The wage was considered more of an honorarium - I was not expected to be using it to live on (hah, as if I could have!).

You'd need to check with your local professional organizations, I think, for best advice. You are at Wichita State, or West Texas State up in Canyon? You'd get less in those communities than in Dallas or Austin, probably, no matter what the field.

Good luck.

I go to Texas State, in San Marcos (between San Antonio and Austin).

Wouldn't you have better luck asking around at your schools career center,
they would have the most up to date info, regarding intern pay. never mind,
I doubt you would take the info even if the intern hiring lady was waving
a your hired sign at you dressed as Cartmans mother. :?

I think that used to be called Southwest Texas State. My sister got her degree there, if it's the same place. At least you have Austin and/or San Antonio. Better than out west, as far as salaries go. Good luck!

That's my plan, but I don't go back until next week.

As others have said, it depends almost entirely on what field you are in.

I was a computer engineering major and here is what I experienced:
1. Internship after freshman year with database admin team not affiliated with any school program: $14.90/hour
2. Internship after sophomore year with data warehouse in an official internship program at the company, but not affiliated with any school program: $15/hour
3. Internship after junior year with programming team in an official school internship program: $10/hour, but I complained about it and got it up to $12/hour

So basically for jobs not found through the school it was about $15/hour and for jobs directly through the school (where the school paid me instead of the company) the school seemed to take a cut or something and I only got $10-$12/hour.

All of these jobs were normal full-time 40 hours/week. If an internship is paid, you should expect to get at least $10/hour and I have never heard of anyone getting more than $17/hour even for high demand fields. I was in school 2004-2008 so that's about as recent as possible I guess. Also this is in Dallas. I would imagine it would likely be different in less populated areas where big business isn't as prominent.

Wow, that's quite good for an internship.

It really is. My first job, after getting my masters, paid $11 an hour. "Professional" job, 1996. So much for spending 7 years in higher education to get a high-paying job.

I don't know about other engineering majors, but for Chemical Engineers the standard is 2/3 entry-level pay, though not all go by this.

I got all the paperwork for my internship done. Yet, strangely enough, I had already gotten two full-time job offers, one in California and one in Nebraska.
