If you had to choose between the 3, who would you (as an AS person) rather work with

A) Corporate/lawyer/business NT types who wore suits and most of them backstabbed each other all the time to get ahead
B) rednecks in hardhats who swear and scream at you but were basically good guys
C) Bureaucrat office-types who weren't loud but tended to lie and play subtle games

I personally would pick B. Also for the sake of argument, if you don't pick A, B, or C, you end up broke or earning minimum wage.

I voted A because that's who I'm probably going to be working with, and I'm actually pretty good at seeing above their BS. But I'd be able to do B as well, the side effect of living in Wyoming for 20 years.

For me, A would be toughest because they have the most ulterior motives and hardest to fit in with as an AS. That I cannot stand. Usually the more NT people who want your job or who want to get ahead in the company, the worse it would be for this. I thought you were in engineering though, working with engineers is like a cross between being on a construction site and being with a bunch of white coats I thought.

Initially, yes, but most engineers end up in upper-level management within 5-10 years. This does depend a lot on the company in question (my friends working for Georgia Pacific will pretty much always be working in mills), but right now I'm trying to get a job with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which would be mostly an office job (unless I end up being a resident inspector for a reactor).

Rednecks in hardhats need someone with enough brains to tell them what to do to make money.

As long as I didn't have to play along, C.

In either of those options I'd be an outlier... either under the radar or aware enough to be bitter about the whole system and subtly make fun of them.

If I have to play along... minimum wage subsistence living it is!

Though I could get along with the rednecks... maybe... I'm kind of 'soft' though... they would give a hard time for a long time... depends on what you mean by basically good guys.

I would go to C: I never had difficulties with bureaucrats. Read the law, the by-laws, the statutory instruments, the government guidelines and start sentences like "According to the statutory instrument No. 46633, paragraph 5, lit. a, (2) XIV, I think we should do it my way, otherwise I would be forced to use the complains procedure as laid out in ..."

Probably the bureaucrat, because I work in a field in which most of the jobs are in the public sector.

A, I can play that game as well as anybody if I have to.

B sounds like fun as well, though.

Corporate/lawyer/business NT types who wore suits and most of them backstabbed....

Who do you think are the brains behind these d-bags? They're easy to read, impress, and influence.

You can make a lot more money thinking for and cleaning up after white-collar a-holes. Assuming you like money.

Anyway - you can only get stabbed in the back if you keep your back exposed. It's "Cowboy 101".

I have a number of years experience with "B", and had adapted to that environment.

I don't think that I would like "A" or "C".

Ouch, all of them sound like a nightmare. I have been so lucky to always have worked in the electronics industry where I have a sneaky suspicion a lot have AS. Especially engineering and none of my collegues have ever been like that (those three options above)

Sadly due to the credit crunch my job will be gone soon as will my collegues :( then it is back trying to find a nice new job. Which is very very hard.

I am so bad at office politics. I've been told a lot that I tell the truth too often. Tough. That's who I am and they need to deal with it. I hate liars and backstabbers and my job is so full of them. I can't trust anybody at work with anything. I try to stay in my cubicle, keep my head down and do my work.

I'd have problems with the screaming, but I'd choose B. I think with a bit of effort I'd be able to see around the screaming and swearing to them being nice, though not sure I'd be able to not react to it. Ulterior motives I'm not sure I could get my head around. I prefer honesty, lies and two facedness confuse me too much.

I'd go for the Rednecks, I wouldn't be that comfortable in any of the three but I suspect if I kept my head down and did the work they're the only group that wouldn't turn on me.
