To anyone in that area,

I have been researching places to pursue graduate studies (but I haven't made a final decision at to whether I will do it), and I was impressed with Florida Atlantic University's urban planning graduate program.

I was wondering what to expect as to cost of living, climate, stuff to do, etc.

The cost of living is pretty high, the climate is amazing, and there's lots to do. Boca is not far from Miami, which has all kinds of stuff going on.

How much cheaper would Miami or Ft. Lauderdale be?

I'm not sure. South Florida in general is fairly expensive.

Are hurricane evacuations usually orderly, compared to places like Houston and New Orleans?

I've never had to evacuate for a hurricane, but I think after Andrew Florida got its act cleaned up. Emergency preparedness seems very good.

Hi Tim. I live about a half hour from Boca in the Wellington area. It's a little cheaper than Boca. Boca is getting very urbanized.

I've never evacuated for hurricane, just shuttered up and lived without power for serveral days which. I'm 15 miles from the beach which is good! If a Cat. 4 or 5 came, God help us. It would not be organized and there would be dangerous bottlenecks on the highways and probably riots afterwards. Lake Okechobee's levies can break just like New Orleans did and flood a lot of poor people and perhaps the suburbs too.

I don't know much about FAU or other schools in the area. I got my degree in Boston and moved down here to join family later.

Let me know if you need more help.

I have been to Key West, and I liked it. That's the only place I've been in Florida.

However, I was very close to Pensacola one time, when my family rented a beach house in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

If Florida doesn't work out, my alternate state is Colorado.
