My 7 year old daughter is obsessed with Canadian politics and political satire programs. That was what convinced the doctor that she might have Asperger's. She also writes the lyrics of songs she hears on the radio in her notebook and would play a video game called "Rock Band" for hours every day if I allowed her to.

My older Aspie boys were also obsessed with Pokemon and Yu-Gi-O, Lego and Bionacles when they were around that age.

Thanks for your replies everyone!

I forgot to mention space too.

Mollyandbobsmom, my son can recognise all the different types of trains and trams from a distance, and I bet yours can too! My son wants to work at a train station and he has invited my husband over to visit him when he's a grown-up and working there!

My DH takes my son out for train rides and my son takes photos of the stations, which he then proudly shows me when they get home. He wants to make a movie of trains and stations now!

When I was seven, I was interested in animals of all kinds. I also liked to study about the solar system.

My five and a half year old daughter is obsessed with money. If she sees it, it is automatically hers. We call her Tracy Flick.

I figured I could submit this because while biologically she is not seven, she acts like she's sixteen, and she's been doing this for several years now, so that's closer to seven :P

A year ago he was obsessed with countries and capitals. He had this electronic globe and would search for places and listen to the national anthems, etc.
Then he was obsessed with natural disasters like hurricanes, types, where they would hit, how they formed, etc. Also volcanoes and earthquakes.
Now unfortunately he is into Nintendo DS, but horribly so, he won't stop until he is able to go through all the worlds on the Super Mario bros or catch all the Pokemon on the Pokemon Diamond. I limit his playtime to an absurd degree, but it is a struggle. Is anybody else going through this too???

yes, monica, we've been there.........terribly difficult to work on it.....my son would demand that he keep playing until he got to the level he had set out to achieve. heaven forbid he didn't make it- crying, slamming, yelling. UGH. it really only ended once he realized that the limits we set were real and we expected him to comply, that we would give him 5 extra minutes if he was in a place in the game where he couldn't save-again, this was only to get him to a spot where he could save.....and when he realized that he would get a certain amount of time on the computer every day. if he complied with our request for him to get off the computer, he could earn extra time on the computer. if he did not comply with our request, the following day would result in decreased computer time................of course, all of this had to be discussed when he was in a calm state & not while occupied with anything else.

Temma,
you might want to look into a software package called "Railroad Tycoon 2"

No surprise here, but one of my favorite books was about a Siamese cat!

Monica & Sten my 7yr old is just the same is obsessive about his ds & xbox gets very frustrated if he doesn't complete the game very quickly.

He also collects various figures ie DR WHO , Ben 10 but wants the entire collection then goes on to something else.

Animals has been an interest for some yrs now infact the only books he used to get from the library were always animal history type never story books. He does like story books more now but finds it very difficult to seperate real life from fiction.

Our son has just turned 7. He's into creating CDs. This involves mixing up tracks from various existing CDs into a new mix. He then elaborately decorates the CD with textas and creates the booklet, track list with times, front & back covers & spine. It's very important for him to cram as much music as possible onto the CDR. For some reason, when he tries to create one over about 78 min in length our computer usually fails to create it sucessfully, which causes a huge amount of frustration!!

We now limit him to one CD per week. He'd much prefer to create them daily! Once it's created he rarely plays it. It's all about the process, not the outcome. He's created about 50 CDs in the last 9 months, plus a similar number of 'coasters' (duds).

It's little wonder he loves this as the process has so many of the elements that he loves: time & numbers, pop music, using the computer for serious stuff, rigid procedure & rules.

He has other passions too, but that's the most sustained one.

Numbers were an early passion of mine, too. I used to do quite well in math until I got to algebra, then I was only average. I also had a passion for books early on in life, which I retain to this day.

When I was 7 I was wierd. I was into medical things for a while, I think. I actually don't remember much of my interests when I was 7. I liked having my friends over and going to birthday parties, I liked my stuffed bears and pizza and milk and anything exciting that was happening, like parties or storms. I liked junk food, I liked being with my father, I liked staying up late. I don't really remember much at all.

For my both of my sons (they tend to share interests) who just turned 8, it is Bionicles, dinosaurs (especially pterosaurs) and dogs...with Bionicles being the main one. One also has a thing for crocodiles.

Trains were their first big interest. Every time I see a steam engine I get all nostalgic for their toddler years.

They have also had intense superhero and Star Wars phases.
