Advice needed on reasonable levels of homework.
I was just reading someone elses post on their childs readers having the opposite effect. Yep. I told his teachers 3 years ago he could read, he was reading the advanced readers my sons friend in the advanced reading class was bringing home and struggling with. They didn't believe me, J was kept in a remedial reading group, he hated this group, he hated the teacher, he hated the location, so he would roll around on the floor or try to go to sleep. lol I got told to put my kid to bed earlier, whatever! I stopped doing all readers with him, every now and then I would just write the titles in his journal and sign off on them, they were so proud of the level of reading they had helped him achieve. Once the pressure was off and he could pick his own books he was finally interested again.
I have in my IEP a "homework veto" which basically means I have the right for him not to do his homework and not be punished for it,or to do it a different day. If he is having a really bad day which inevitably turns into a bad night, then it is not worth the fight for him to do work that is in generally meaningless and well below him. Especially since he has so little time to work on it anyway, he goes to an autism program twice a week, then there is private OT and speech. so we do have reduced or eliminated homework and it is in the IEP!! !

We started pursuing a diagnosis for my son when he started having major stress and anxiety issues sue to homework load amounts. I asked the other parents, and they all said their children were finishing their homework in about 30 minutes. My son would take 5-6 hours to accomplish the same amount of work.
Our process began with a diagnosis of Executive Function Disorder, which has only recently been modified to Aspergers.
In the U.S., our schools have legal accommodations that must be made for students. We started with a 504 and then moved to an IEP. Before we achieved a diagnosis, though, we were intervening on his behalf. We basically told the teacher and administrator that we would allow him to spend 20 minutes per subject and then he was done no matter where he was. If they punished him for that, they were just plain wrong. Fortunately, we had great teachers and admins who always worked with us.
I see that you posted a reply suggesting this may not be an issue any longer, but it still felt good to share.
