Yes, OK, it was a tangent - but originally a relevant tangent!

Please understand that the real point being made here is that what an NT considers "special" in an Aspie (i.e. in the original post) is only what an Aspie would consider "normal".

Hence my lack of understanding of why a "average" child would ever need to be actually TAUGHT something as fundamentally obvious as the concept of subtraction (at 3 or 7!) What is there TO understand? - it just is!! !!

As to the reading age - no, I admit could not understand all those long words in your quote without reference to a dictionary - although I could easily read them aloud! But my point is that once I had looked in the dictionary, the whole passage would make perfect sense. This last statement would be equally true whether I was 8 or 18. It is not about age, it is about vocabulary (which is acquired through exposure, and will be different for every single person).

I agree completely with Zukenkurl re the "dumbing down" of the education system.

Maybe we should start another thread so we can discuss it properly????? That way this thread could get back on topic........

I wish I could remember half the facts and details that my son can remember.

I wish that I could have the happy outlook on life that he has, despite all the hurdles.

I wish I could see outside of the box as he does, and have the patience to try and see things through his eyes (I don't, unfortunately).

I wish I could process verbal sound better so that I could really get into the endless stream of information and creativity he loves to talk.
