An 11 year old was arrested for taking his therapist's advice and drawing stick figures of his feelings in class when he became upset, instead of act out.

What kind of police state are they running there?!
Sounds like a scene in a Judge Dredd comic.

I can't believe they did this.

I'd say panic, but I generally agree that this was why there was such an unreasonable reaction. However, I can't believe that the therapist wasn't called to testify and that the child is still on probation.

Sorry, not an excuse to arrest an 11-year-old over some drawings.

NWA was censored, attacked in the media and heavily pressured by their record company over 'Cop Killer'... but none of them were ever arrested over it. This kind of retribution enacted on a child - acting under the order of his therapist - is inexcusable.

You cannot punish people for their thoughts, or the act of writing/drawing them. This is a clear violation of this boys first amendment rights. This boy was not violent, did not have a history of violence - you cannot punish him for something he MIGHT do in the future.

Disgusting.

Anyone else here reminded of "The Sixth Sense"?

We worried about this with our nine year old. He loves to draw and is extremly bothered by people bumping his desk all day. We were looking for alternatives instead of him getting up and touching their desk back, so we let him choose a sketch pad to draw in instead when he felt upset about this. We talked to his teacher first to get her on board. I also expressed worry about what if he ever wrote something inappropriate in it. I didn't think he would, but I have also learned to never say never. She told me that his book would be private and that he could not get into trouble for its contents. Later, I found out they lectured him to death about what he couldn't draw in it and then she ended up using it as a reward and only letting him have it if he was being good. Hello, it was to help him regulate his emotions. He didn't need it if he was having a good day. Heaven forbid if a 9 year old had even a private thought at school. I am not suprised this happened at all.

The Education system is a conformist police state.

That's so stupid. I wonder if the therapist feels bad for what happened now? After all he was the one who told him to draw out his feelings than act on them.

Does anyone else find it bizarre that there's only the single news report and then a whole lot of speculation? I put it in Google Alerts - everything else that comes up refers to this initial article. Nobody else has successfully interviewed police or talked to the court system, even though the report is going viral right now, and has been picked up all over the country (by predominately conservative news sources.) One commentator went so far as to say that the reaction made him wonder if there was more to the story than the initial report suggested. It also appears from some reports that the incident happened much earlier and is just now being reported.

I don't know what all this means - at face value, I'm still struggling with the idea of police handcuffing and putting a boy on probation for a drawing, especially after the school determined there was no problem.

that's scary, especially when i think of my 11yo. she draws comics of things like kids in her class throwing bombs at each other and her teacher being bit by poison snakes
