Hi all,

I know the tooth brushing thing has been done so many times. My problem is, I'm in Australia my
12 year old hates brushing his teeth, every day he begs and pleads not to do it. He tells me it makes him feel sick. After months of trying to find out what about it makes him feel sick (as well as years of different tooth brushes and pastes) he now says he thinks it's the foamy tooth paste.

Does any one know of a non foaming tooth paste in Australia?

Hi
Why not try to get him to brush his teeth using no toothpaste whatsoever? Apparently all the toothpaste does is provide a nice fresh taste and smell, perhaps he could use a mouth wash after. if breath is an issue, though I dont know what not very natural things are in mouthwashes. The actual cleaning action is all done by the brush. Toothpaste is a very western concept, many cultures don't use it at all.

Hi Aurea

I dont live in Australia, but I am sure you can find a gel toothpaste not sure if you have tried it already but it is available widely in supermarkets. If you can't find it you will be able to on the internet. Hope this is of some help. It doesnt foam up and its clear, I think like my son he doesnt like tooth paste when it goes on his face and its very messy. Also maybe he is putting too much on his brush.

My son is 12 and I think all parents have difficulties with children brushing teeth.

Great suggestions everyone I will give them ago.

I think I'll start with the no tooth paste just to see if it is in act the toothpaste that makes him feel sick. So simple why didn't I think of it. Duh!! !

You can also try putting a bit of the kids mouth wash (a drop or two) on the brush, this will also not foam. Just make sure its not the mint kind, I used the bubble gum flavored one for my daughter. We had a lot of issues with tooth brushing now she lets me do it but we have to use a very mild tooth paste.

I didn't get a chance to respond again yesterday.

Just wanted you all to know, NO toothpaste and then rinsing with mouth wash= NO feeling sick!! !

Yay :D Fingers crossed it keeps working. I know it's not the best result but it's a step in the right direction. Thanks again all.

Hi aurea.. I don't think the toothpaste is that important, as long as he brushes for long enough morning and night. You might want to try Colgate Blue Minty Gel. Woolworths stock it, but I haven't been able to get it in Coles for ages. I'd ask your dentist about the mouth wash, there's been a lot of stuff in the media about how the alcohol in most mouth washes might be linked to mouth cancers.

Hi Anni Thanks, we've tried the blue minty one, :( still no good.
As far as mouth wash goes we use Colgate Plax it's alcohol free.

I'm going to pop into our chemist and ask one of the girls their for some advice.

he went well again today with out the toothpaste, only he tells me he doesn't think his teeth are clean. It's a pain in the butt, he wants to have clean teeth but can't stand the tooth paste makes him feel sick and like he needs to pee? (don't ask me about the peeing stuff I don't know either)

The taste of food can be pretty terrible after brushing your teeth, if that's part of the problem an ayurvedic tongue scraper will get rid of a LOT more of the toothpaste residue (and bacteria) then just rinsing.

Hi

Have you thought your son may also not like the strong mint taste of the toothpaste? My kids both use a plain toothpaste from "soul pattinsons". You can buy it from soul pattinson pharmacies in Australia. It doesn't taste great but my kids use it with no problem and it still has fluoride in it . From my knowledge it is not foamy either :) You can search for a local pharmacy online but it would not allow me to put a link. Good luck

You don't need toothpaste to keep your teeth clean... you can always try tooth powder. homemade is easy and you'll know exactly what is in it. It may be helpful if your son helps make it and picks the flavor he'd like to use.

I dont know if its any help but my 13 year old has just had fissure sealants done by the dentist where they paint the tooth with a varnish which stops it rotting. He did all the back teeth and it took about 2 minutes each tooth, we had to have separate appointments for each tooth as my daughter has challenging behaviour but normally they would do it in one go.

Actually tooth paste breaks the water surface tension so it can do it's job, neutralizes enamel dissolving acid, and inhibits the bacteria that creates it.

If it's just the flavor that makes him sick, tooth paste comes in a variety of different flavors. I could usually tolerate the mint flavors in the gel variety but not the paste variety. Superfluroidated toothpaste, which can be obtained through a dentist, is usually mild and doesn't foam much. It typically comes in mint and fruit flavors. You might want to look into that.
