If I had a way to tell you
With my words then I would say
First and foremost that I love you
I’d tell you every single day.

I’d tell you how much it pains me
To whine and scream and fight,
But that I can’t seem to help myself,
In this world so loud and bright.

I’d tell you that inside my head,
There’s so much that I know,
Math and words and music,
But I just don’t know how to show.

I’d tell you how very much
A part of your world I wish to be.
But that there’s just too much going on
To join in your games, for me.

I’d tell you that I’m in here!
This, I want to scream and shout.
I’d tell you that I’m a person, too,
Of this I have no doubt.

And I’d tell you, don’t give up on me!
I have such a future bright.
But only if you believe in me,
And keep it in your sight.

I’d tell you how much more to me
Than autism wants to come through.
I have interests and desires,
I’m just waiting to show to you.

I’d tell you that I know things,
That you would never guess.
Not by voice, but hands and body,
This is how I express.

I may never speak your language,
But if you can learn mine,
I will tell you, tell you, tell you…
I tell you all the time.

I love this.

I think you should put a copy of this post in the recommended reading thread. I know it is something to read, and not a recommendation on what to read, but how wonderful if all our parents looking for information saw it.

Did you write that? I loved it.

I am really bad at speaking to people, always have been. When I was 12 years old, in middle school, and really starting to feel bad about myself and even thinking of suicide my teacher sort of saved my life. She had us do writing assignments, short stories and making up definitions for words that we spelled wrong on a spelling test. I have never been the best speller but I found that I can write. My teacher pulled me aside one day and she told me that even though I was quiet, aside from when I got all hyper and excited and was trying to make the other kids laugh, and she knew that I had a hard time saying what I needed or what I felt but that I had this "power" (that is what she called it) to write. Everything that was locked in my head came out through my pencil. I was so excited I started writing poetry. I love to write, it comes easy for me, its my most effective mode of communication and I even write stories which I have had in my mind for as long as I can remember. It always said on all my report cards "April daydreams too much", yes I did and I learned that I could share all the amazing things going on inside my head by writing them on paper.....and now typing them in the computer.
I always say the only useful class I took in High School was typing :).

Simple. Beautiful. A great reminder when I look at my son. Doesn't matter how verbal he is (very), he can't seem to get across what he feels. Thanks so much.

Yes, I wrote it. I've writen nearly 500 blog posts (www.autisticspeaks.wordpress.com) and a couple of books, with another on the way.

That's about right re the only useful thing I learned... I learned to type at age 8 or 9 and was typing really well by 10. I did the fifth grade keyboarding curriculum in a few days; it was meant to last 9 weeks!

I have a degree in education, and I must say that the useful things I learned there were not physics and pedagogy but rather how to write better and that I had autism!

When I went to Medical Assisting school they made us take keyboarding, at least it helped a bit with spelling :).
