I'm not a parent, but the main reason why I'm putting this in the parents' forum is because I am curious about one thing. If you and your aspie child were in a store, and there were huge ceiling vents in there, and your aspie child started staring up at the vents continuously, enough so that he is un aware that he may bump into somebody, what would you do? I am curious, and, being an aspie, slightly obsessed.

I like this question, because my Aspie does look up at the vents :) I obviously can't let him run into everybody or get in people's way, so I'd start by reminding him to look where he's going. If he can't seem to stop looking up, I'll ask if he wants to ride in the cart since he still fits in there, assuming the cart isn't too full of groceries at that point. I would never leave the store because of something like that unless it triggers a meltdown, in which case we'd just go out to the car until he could calm down. He rarely has meltdowns in public, though.

If my child kept looking up at ceiling fans in a store, I would take him (using a son in my example) to a quiet corner, where he can stand quietly and look at the vents as long as he pleases. Better yet, I would find a bench he can sit on while doing the same. In the meantime, I would shop nearby, making sure my son stays within my line of sight. In addition, I would tell him how to respond if people ask why he's looking at the ceiling; namely, I'd tell him to say: "I'm just thinking."

vents are neat... they go places, and ninjas use them
Depends on the kid... a gentle reminder would be about as far as I'd take it unless it got out of hand

You need to keep your kid safe, so you should tell them they need to look where they are going. If it wasn't a safety issue it would be okay to let him stare.

I try to choose shops that have ceiling fans because I know my son will be entertained & I can shop in peace. I usually gently remind him to watch where he's going & if necessary, guide him. If my hubby is also bored in the shop, he'll often sit with my son where they can have a good view of the fans. :D

I'd just calmly remind my oldest autistic son to watch where he is going and to be careful. :)
