Has anybody else had this experience with there child?
My son is almost 15 years old and has never been big on laughing because he syas he hates it. Last night , he started laughing about something silly his step-father said and then he began to hit himself, call himself names and started crying. It took him about 10 minutes to calm down.

This really bothers me because I do not understand it, and it gets a little annoying that he get's irritated with me if i try to make him laugh.

Any thoughts?

i think this could be a case that he believes that he laughs in a wierd way and doesn't want anyone to know that he does

You have probably already done this, but have you approached the problem directly and asked him why he doesn't want to laugh?

Solid might be right or he may have been teased and bullied by his peers and sees his laughter as the cause.

Does your son have self-esteem issues? If so help him see his strengths, encourage his interests, and praise his accomplishments.

Our son laughs but it took him awhile to develop a sense of humor. If your son doesn't like to laugh you may have to be satisfied with a smile or small chuckle.

i don't think it is the sound that bothers him. It seems more like he can't stand the feeling of it.

Maybe someone made fun of the way he laughed in the past. Or maybe he laughed at something once and someone told him the laughter was unappropriate for the situation. So maybe he thinks laughing is bad.

I didn't like to laugh or smile either as a kid. But then it was an "image" thing for me. I wanted to be one of those "punk" people. I thought maybe being a "bad boy (or girl)" would make those mean kids and teachers want to not mess with me and leave me alone. Laughing or smilng made me look weak.
