My son has started high school, and is handling his morning routine by himself! :!: 8O  But there's no longer a snack time, and he's having trouble making a quick breakfast that holds him til lunch.

He won't eat eggs, so a lot of stuff is out. No hot cereal, so far. He's going to be brave and try some yogurt today (I got a very smooth brand) and I hope that will work. I also bought some supposedly more filling/hearty cereal and Carnation instant breakfast to try.

He tends to be a bit rigid about breakfast foods for breakfast and dinner foods for dinner and so on, but is starting to get more flexible around it.

Anyone have any other ideas?

What did he eat when you made breakfast for him?

Does he eat meat? Protein and some fat will help him feel full until lunch time. They sell pre-cooked bacon now, and frozen breakfast sandwiches (like biscuit with sausage) that he could microwave. My kid likes a couple of rolled up pieces of ham lunch meat with her breakfast. Carbs like cereal and sugary drink mixes burn off quickly and leave you hungry after a couple hours.

Sandwiches, bread with: butter, tomato concentrate, ketchup, hard cheese, pressed cheese, processed cheese, cottage cheese, ham, radish, tomatoes, strawberries, banana... whatever you can imagine.

Get a toaster(the open-close type) and try making hot sandwiches - for example bread toasted with banana is an unusual combination I found tasty. And bread toasted with pressed cheese and ham is commonly known meal.

You say eggs are a no-no but your son might want to taste some... chocolate omelet! Mix egg, wheat, sugar and cocoa. Can be made on frying pan or... in the open-close toaster!

Those are stuff I discovered while making my own meals as a latchkey kid. Maybe you should try letting your son to "ravage" the kitchen and make a meal by himself out of random food he finds - as a play. He might want to taste his own creation.

Btw. Cereals are good with cold milk or yogurt. Personally I hate hot milk because of the texture.

Cereal Bars are good for grab and go.

I make large batches of beans and rice and use this for quick food anytime. The kids and wife seem to like it.

It does not have to be a breakfast food. My son also will not eat eggs, and won't eat hot cereal. He will eat Cheerios, but not with milk or any liquid in it.

Fruits are quickly washed and even cut, if he needs them cut, sandwiches, cheese, dry cereal, bagels (and a spread, if he is inclined) are some ideas.

-Breakfast sandwiches (no egg of course)
-Pancakes/Waffles
-Breakfast raps (no egg)
-Muffins
-Biscuits
-Fresh fruit
-Smoothies

Just some options. I would have had lots more options if he liked eggs.

Bagel with cream cheese, grilled cheese, ham or turkey sandwich, smoothies with protein powder, BLT, avocado on toast is really yummy with a little salt, any kind of nut butter or Nutella on toast...

Every weekend I make a batch of pancakes. I use the bisquick whole grain mix and I add 2 scoops of protein powder. After the pancakes have cooled, I put them in the freezer on a cookie sheet. Once they are frozen, I put them in a giant zip lock bag and put them in the freezer. For breakfast, my son has one of these pancakes and a protein shake. He finds that this combination keeps him full the longest. He cooks the pancake in the microwave. He prefers organic coconut sugar sprinkled on the pancakes instead of syrup. He does all this himself. We have one of those nutribullet things that he uses to make his protein shake. Oh, yeah, we also put a scoop of flavorless fiber powder in the protein shake. He likes the muscle milk light powder in vanilla flavor the best for the protein shake. It has less sugar in it.

If your son has any issues with attention or focus, my son finds having extra protein at breakfast helps him focus better.

Good options. I forgot a bagel, I love bagels. My opinion of bagels have changed since I watched an Autism Speaks commercial. A mother of an autistic child talks about how other parents ask her to come out for a bagel.

I have a bunch of fruit and a little bit of nut butter for protein. The quick carbs wakes me up and gets me ready for the day.

LOL, am in the same boat, but DS eats eggs - I've been pre-making frozen breakfast egg sandwiches for him to microwave for himself with moderate success. (I am most worried about getting protein into him in the morning.

One of our favorite quick breakfasts is something we call "Elvis Oatmeal." It's a mashed banana (frozen works just fine, and I keep frozen ones just for this purpose) hot oatmeal, peanut butter, and milk to the consistency you choose. You can put it in a blender and make it into a cold smoothie, or microwave it for a hot breakfast.

There are a bunch of high protein cereals - they tend to be peanut-based - we got DS High Protein Cheerios (He drinks almond milk, so the protein from the milk isn't there.)

Would he eat grilled cheese on a breakfasty kind of bread so it is less like a "dinner" food - maybe a bun or English Muffin if he doesn't like biscuits? You could do the same with peanut butter (DS liked peanut butter, banana and a little shaved chocolate for lunch...sounds kinda breakfasty to me) French toast can be made in advance, frozen, and popped in the toaster, as can pancakes and blintzes.

Sometimes, food issues can be about needing a routine. When I used to make DS's lunch, we made a chart - I think a lot of the struggle I had getting him to eat was that he needed a plan. If you can get your son to think ahead about breakfast at the beginning of the week, it might be easier for him.

His dad usually cooked, and he'd make pancakes, waffles, bacon -- fairly complicated stuff. My son has learned to make bacon, but I don't think he feels up to it most mornings.

You can purchase almost all of that stuff pre-made for reheating. If you're looking to help him be even more independent, you can teach him to cook it all over the weekend and freeze it in individual portions for reheating during the week. http://www.austin360.com/news/lifestyle ... f-1/nRWqn/

It's easy to make a large batch of bacon like this: http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/breakf ... /bacon.htm It reheats easily in the microwave.

Lots of other good ideas here: http://www.howdoesshe.com/21-make-ahead ... t-recipes/ (I like the pancake "muffins" idea!)

I would either make muffins from a mix in the mornings and they would get one if they were hungry, or they would get a Pop Tart which I keep, or make a bowl of cold cereal with milk. Those seem to work just fine. Also, it doesn't have to be breakfast food you know, just because it's morning. One of mine liked to heat up pizza rolls for breakfast. Whatever floats your boat is what I say.
