RE: Kids w/ Classic Autism, PDD-NOS & Speech Delays
Mess, mess, mess. We're on top of most of the 'stuff' situation, with cabinets fitted and various baby locks and elastic hair-ties, the problem is food. My son likes to eat while running around.
We went to visit another family on the weekend with a little Autie of the same age and disposition as our son, it was interesting being in a house like ours - quite spartan inside through necessity, fully fenced and gated section, locks on everything!
Edit: Pic of my boy in the swing I just put up (An Ikea one) the kids love it
That swing looks like great fun. I love IKEA, and so does my son ... he asks to go there often, usually after hours (think 2 AM). No one is helping me tackle the "stuff" situation and I can't do it on my own. And the grandparents are always adding to the stuff. I'm going to just start giving away/throwing out/throwing in the attic a lot of stuff soon.
Our first floor is hard wood and the couch has a washable cover so that's easy enough to clean. To deal with the sticky mess upstairs I have an area rug (IKEA one with roads for playing with toy cars) over the carpet, I can also throw that in the wash because my son also gets juice and peanut butter and jelly and crumbs of all sorts all over everything.
Nice! My son has yet to do this.
I was flabbergasted, lots of hugs and high-fives for that. We got a very rare chance to see a movie today (Moonrise Kingdom) and my Mom watched him for us, I find it hard to believe but she told us he said "Mommy, Daddy come back, I want to go home" after we left (he had a good time anyway). I guess he's going through a developmental spurt! He has a lot of oppositional behaviors that are driving me crazy though, one his newest things which is kind of cute is that he always wants to have on either his Batman or Super Mario Bros. pajamas. We actually went out with him in his pajamas today because we didn't have the time to struggle with him over clothes.
I wonder if I can get him to finally say his name? Recently he's been asking me "Are you a star?" all the time so I just say, "No, I'm Daddy. Who are you?" Hope it works.
Suggest just showing your son a photo of himself and saying his name. That should do the trick.

Well we just bought a bunch of new furniture for the house. I got a warranty that included any sort of issues with the fabric, including accidents. They said I can use it any time I want. I have the feeling they will end up hating us.

If only it were that easy.

He has recently started calling his little brother "Elmo" when he gets annoying, though.

I think he probably may know more than you first suspect (believe me I've been through this) another technique would be to get him to look into a mirror and point to his photo and say his name. I'm sure he will recognize the connection.
Yeah I do agree that he seems to know a lot more than he appears to, but while he is considered "verbal" he is still not very communicative yet.
For any of you who have an ipad/phone I just wanted to share that Toca Doctor a cute little app will be free until the 26th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQSvWYOhlNk&feature=plcp
Grabbed that and also the free Monster food one this morning, the kids are sitting with the iPad in bed laughing away

Glad to hear they're enjoying it!

Hi all, we have decided to get an assistance dog for our boy. They provide a number of benefits, but I think one of the main things is they allow you to get out and about in the community safely and more easily with your child.
The child is tethered to the dog through a belt type harness.
Mainly this is going to be a help for my wife, for me its less of a problem as I'm able to lift James and carry him around on my back when needed and also run faster than him, but she can't do this as easily.
We have gone to visit a family with one and also had another family come around to our house with their son and their dog. Perhaps most interesting is looking at the other Autistic kids that use these dogs. Non-verbal and similar to my son.
Now we are going to start raising the funds, about $20,000 (it actually costs more than double that to raise and train the dogs) so we going to be doing fundraising. I'm hoping that won't be too hard, but its a lot of money!
